The 30-second answer
Excel Class is less about climbing a single cabin ladder and more about choosing a lane. Standard cabins buy the room. Family Harbor adds a family ecosystem. Havana adds restricted-access outdoor space but requires every guest to be at least 12. Cloud 9 Spa bundles spa privileges. Carnival Excel Suites add the strongest suite-only access layer through Loft 19. Decide which lane matters first; only then compare the room categories inside it.
Family Harbor
Exclusive lounge, breakfast and snacks, games and movies, kids-eat-free benefits at most specialty restaurants, plus one free evening of Night Owls babysitting.
Havana · 12+
Exclusive Havana pool-area access. Cabana categories add an oversized outdoor lounging space.
Cloud 9 Spa
Special décor plus spa privileges such as thermal-suite access, priority reservations, fitness classes and discounts.
Carnival Excel Suites
These are the cabins that include Loft 19 access and its additional suite benefit layer.
The current Excel Class trio
This master guide covers the three current Excel sisters: Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee. Their cabin systems share the same broad logic, but exact categories, cabin locations, balcony shapes and occupancy must still be verified ship by ship.
Mardi Gras
The original Excel ship and the baseline for the individual cabin audits.
Carnival Celebration
The second sister keeps the same access-driven cabin structure.
Carnival Jubilee
The Texas-based sister completes the current three-ship comparison.
Standard cabins: establish the room before pricing the perks
Excel ships still have the familiar Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite structure. Carnival says Ocean View rooms are a little larger than Interior rooms on Mardi Gras and that most include a sofa. Premium Interior is another useful wrinkle: Carnival describes it as sharing the floorplan of some higher-priced rooms, minus the balcony, with a sitting area and sofa.
Interior
The lowest-cost way onto the ship. Compare location and occupancy before paying extra for a themed version.
Premium Interior
A useful value category when available: sitting area and sofa without paying for a balcony.
Ocean View
More room than standard Interior on Mardi Gras, with many rooms adding a sofa.
Balcony
Only the beginning of the Excel balcony decision. Location and outdoor geometry still matter.
Family Harbor: convenience is the upgrade
Family Harbor is not nautical wallpaper with a cute name. Carnival places these rooms near the exclusive Family Harbor Lounge, which provides breakfast, daytime snacks, board games, family movies and video games. Children also eat free at most onboard specialty restaurants, and the room includes one free evening of Night Owls babysitting.
Breakfast + snacks
A nearby place to feed or occupy children can matter more than a modest cabin upgrade.
Kids eat free
Carnival says children in Family Harbor accommodations eat free in most onboard specialty restaurants.
One Night Owls evening
A real benefit that exists outside the cabin.
Family Harbor OV Suite
On Mardi Gras, it sleeps five with separate bedroom and living areas, a walk-in closet, full bathroom and separate washroom.
For five, count bathrooms before square feet.
The Family Harbor Ocean View Suite's separate washroom can be more useful at 7:30 a.m. than another chunk of open floor space. For five people, function can beat raw square footage.
Havana: check the age rule before the price
Every guest in a Havana stateroom must be at least 12 years old. That immediately removes the category for many families. For eligible parties, exclusive Havana pool-area access is the defining benefit. Havana Cabana categories then add an oversized outdoor chill space, while Havana suites layer more room onto the same access proposition.
12+ only
Havana does not belong on the shortlist unless every traveler clears the age requirement.
Havana pool area
The restricted pool environment is the category's defining benefit.
Outdoor living space
Cabana rooms add a substantially different exterior experience from a conventional balcony.
Room + lanai
Carnival describes Mardi Gras' Havana Extended Cabana with separate living and bedroom areas plus a private lanai and swinging chair.
Cloud 9 Spa: value depends on actual spa use
Cloud 9 accommodations span multiple room types rather than one physical cabin. Carnival's current amenity material includes spa bathrobes and slippers, Elemis toiletries, priority spa reservations, unlimited thermal-suite access, two complimentary fitness classes per guest, and port-day treatment discounts. Carnival's spa FAQ says the accommodation benefits apply to the first two adults in each Cloud 9 stateroom. That can be valuable for a heavy spa user and poor value for someone who only likes the décor.
Thermal suite
Ask one simple question: would you otherwise pay for thermal-suite access?
Priority spa reservations
Useful when your preferred treatment times matter.
Two included classes
Carnival's current amenity sheet lists two complimentary fitness classes per guest.
Interior through Suite
Evaluate the physical room and spa package separately. The Cloud 9 name does not tell you the cabin geometry.
Balconies: the subcategory can change the experience
Excel Class turns the balcony category into its own decision tree. Carnival's Mardi Gras material identifies conventional Balcony plus Junior Balcony, Cove Balcony, Extended Balcony and Premium-View Extended Balcony variants, before adding themed Havana and Cloud 9 versions. The view, height above the water, outdoor footprint and access package can all change while the booking screen still looks like a balcony comparison.
Cove Balcony
Choose the lower position and sheltered feel deliberately. It differs substantially from a high open balcony.
Extended Balcony
Worth examining when the balcony itself is where you plan to spend time.
Premium-View Extended
Geometry and sightline can matter more than the broad category name.
Junior Balcony
Private outside space without assuming the same footprint as every other balcony category.
Carnival Excel Suites: the premium extends beyond the room
Carnival's ordinary suite benefits already include priority check-in, boarding and debarkation, dining priority, bottled water, pillow-top mattresses and bathrobes. Carnival Excel Suites add another layer. Official amenity material lists complimentary Loft 19 access, priority Loft 19 cabana reservations, a dedicated concierge phone line and guaranteed reservations at most specialty dining venues when reserved 24 hours ahead among the Excel-suite benefits.
Large balcony + living space
Carnival describes these with areas for dining and relaxing and spacious balconies with loungers and dining space.
Wraparound balcony
Port/starboard corner placement, lounge area, wet bar and a large wraparound outdoor space.
Wraparound + outdoor tub
Aft-facing views, large wraparound balcony and private outdoor tub.
Top of the ladder
The flagship suite product. Price it as both accommodation and access rather than as square footage alone.
Loft 19 is part of the fare comparison.
If you would use the private retreat, Excel-suite pricing carries value outside the cabin. If you would barely visit it, Loft 19 should not justify the suite premium by itself.
The Excel Class decision order
Start with party eligibility
How many guests? Any children under 12? That can eliminate Havana before price enters the conversation.
Choose the access package
Standard, Family Harbor, Havana, Cloud 9 Spa or Excel Suite/Loft 19. Pay for the extra access only when you will use it.
Choose the physical room
Interior, Ocean View, Balcony or Suite — plus the specific subcategory and occupancy.
Choose the outdoor geometry
Cove, standard, extended, premium-view, Cabana or wraparound can create very different vacations.
Check exact location
Look above, below and beside the cabin. Proximity to the benefit you bought can be an advantage; proximity to noise can be the opposite.
Price the benefits in dollars
Would you buy thermal access? Specialty dining for the kids? A retreat cabana? If not, leave that benefit out of your value calculation.
Where the class guide stops
Carnival Excel Class cabin FAQ
Which ships are in Carnival Excel Class?
This guide covers the three current sisters: Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee.
What is the best Carnival Excel Class cabin for a family?
Family Harbor deserves the first price check when its lounge and family perks fit your trip. On Mardi Gras, the Family Harbor Ocean View Suite sleeps five and adds separate bedroom and living areas, a full bathroom and a separate washroom.
Can children stay in Havana cabins?
Only if they are at least 12. Carnival requires every Havana stateroom guest to be age 12 or older.
What do Family Harbor cabins include?
Current Carnival benefits include access to the Family Harbor Lounge with breakfast, snacks and entertainment, children eating free at most onboard specialty restaurants, and one free evening of Night Owls babysitting.
Are Cloud 9 Spa cabins worth it?
They can be when you would otherwise pay for and use the included spa benefits. Carnival says the Cloud 9 accommodation benefits apply to the first two adults in each stateroom, so larger parties should not value the package as though every guest receives the same benefits.
What is special about Carnival Excel Suites?
Beyond regular Carnival suite benefits, Carnival's current Excel-suite amenity material includes complimentary Loft 19 access, priority Loft 19 cabana reservations, a dedicated concierge phone line and guaranteed reservations at most specialty dining venues when reserved 24 hours ahead.
Is a Cove Balcony better than a regular Balcony?
Not universally. Cove balconies sit lower and closer to the water with a more sheltered feel. A conventional or extended balcony may be better if you prefer height, openness or more outdoor area.
