Princess Grand Class: The Old Guard That Still Carries Alaska

Grand Class is where Princess became recognisably Princess. Between 1998 and 2008 the line built seven of these ships — Grand, Caribbean, Crown, Emerald, Ruby, Diamond and Sapphire — and during that era it introduced Movies Under the Stars and The Sanctuary adults-only deck, the two signatures every later class inherited. They are 109,000–116,000-gross-ton mid-size ships carrying roughly 2,600–3,140 guests, they sail on the fleet's friendliest fares, and every July they do the heaviest lifting in Alaska.

The promise predates the technology

Every Grand-class ship spent years — in Grand Princess's case nearly two decades — keeping the Love Boat promise with nothing but humans. Our Built to Solve essay on Princess frames the Medallion as a machine for manufacturing attention; these seven hulls are the proof the attention came first. When the wearable arrived in 2017 it was retrofitted onto ships that had already been noticing people the analogue way, with crew memory and a bartender who knew your order by day two.

This is also the class where the brand's signatures were invented. Somewhere in the Grand era — we won't pretend to know aboard which single ship, because published accounts conflict — Princess first pointed a giant screen at the pool and called it Movies Under the Stars, and first roped off a top-deck haven for adults and called it The Sanctuary. Both ideas were considered odd at the time. Both are now fleet doctrine, copied up the line into Royal and Sphere Class at several times the price.

And then there's the north. Of the eight Princess ships that called at Skagway in July 2026 — more than any other cruise line put into that port that month — three were Grand Class, and each of the three gave guests a fourteen-hour day. The newest ships get the press releases; the 1998–2008 ships get the gangway down at six in the morning. That is not nostalgia. That is the duty roster.

The honest part, stated plainly: this is old hardware. Corridors, ceilings and cabin bathrooms were drawn in the nineties and early two-thousands, and no software update changes a deck plan. What you get in exchange is the fleet's gentlest pricing, a crowd a third smaller than a Sphere ship's, and the originals of the ideas everyone else is sailing the copies of.

The through-line

Sphere Class asks whether attention can scale up. Grand Class answers a different question: whether attention survives age. Twenty-plus years in, with the fares lowest and the port days longest, the evidence says yes.

Published 2026 per-person rates; Princess adjusts them without fanfare, so read these as the shape of the deal rather than a contract. Bought piecemeal the same inclusions run roughly double, and the familiar side-effect applies with interest on a cheap fare: the bundle hands you so much that the sea day becomes a to-do list. Decide in advance which inclusions you'll cheerfully ignore.

Caribbean Princess

An extra deck, a missing roof.

Princess altered the Grand blueprint once, deliberately: an added Riviera deck of cabins pushed maximum capacity past 3,600, and the sliding pool roof was deleted because a ship built for year-round Caribbean never needs one. More berths over the same pools is the honest arithmetic that follows.

Across seven hulls and two decades of refits, venue rosters drift — so this section deals in the class's constants and tells you to check your ship's own deck plan for the rest.

By day

The Sanctuary is the daytime signature — the adults-only top-deck retreat this era introduced, since copied across the fleet. On ships this size it stays a genuinely calm room rather than a brand gesture.

Plus's two casual meals go furthest here. On the fleet's gentlest fares, the $60 bundle's included casual dining, waived delivery fees and folded-in crew appreciation cover a larger share of the whole holiday than they ever can on a flagship fare.

After sundown

Movies Under the Stars was born in this era — a giant poolside screen, blankets, popcorn, and a film under actual weather. It remains the class's best evening precisely because it never needed a new ship to work.

We won't inventory seven entertainment rosters from memory. Line-ups shift with refits and seasons; the honest advice is to treat the class constants as given and confirm the specific ship's current venues before you book around one.

Why were Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess built in Japan?

They're the only Princess ships ever constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan, both delivered in 2004. Diamond leaned into the birthplace: she runs Japan-market seasons and carries the Izumi Japanese bath, the largest of its kind at sea when introduced.
