Why the oldest hull gets the biggest itinerary
Chris Evert christened Volendam in 1999. Fincantieri built her at Marghera, in Venice, and at 61,214 gross tons for 1,432 guests she's one of the two smallest ships Holland America runs.
She has since been given the longest single itinerary the company sells.
Her logbook is most of the argument. In 2002 she became the largest ship of the day to pass beneath Tokyo's Rainbow Bridge on an Orient sailing.
In 2009 she opened the line's Australian market, circumnavigations included. From 2012 she worked the Inside Passage out of Vancouver, and across 2013 to 2016 she spent long seasons in Asia.
Then, in 2016, she carried a solar-eclipse viewing cruise through Indonesia's Makassar Strait — an entire ship repositioned so a passenger list could stand on deck beneath a shadow lasting a few minutes.
It's hard to think of a plainer statement of what this company thinks it's selling.
In 2022 Volendam served as shelter in Rotterdam for people displaced from Ukraine. We record it because it's part of what this hull has been used for, not because it belongs in a sales argument.
Why this matters to the argument
The company's own scheduling is the evidence. Holland America has run world voyages in the 125-to-135-day range across editions; the 2027 sailing is 129 days across six continents.

A 1999 interior, maintained rather than reinvented, aboard the smallest hull in the fleet. Set your expectations at well-kept and comfortable, not fresh.
The rooms themselves
There are fewer cabins here and they were drawn a long time ago. What the arrangement buys you is a ship of 1,432 guests — roughly half a flagship's load — where the public rooms rarely resolve into a queue.
On a voyage counted in months the priorities invert. Wardrobe space, a desk you can actually work at and a bathroom you can live with matter more than contemporary styling.
The categories worth paying up for on a long sailing are the ones with real storage.
The upper categories
The premium tiers aboard are the thinnest in the fleet. Club Orange is sold as a paid upgrade as it is everywhere else, but there's no dedicated Club Orange dining room on this ship and nothing approaching the suite arrangements on the newer classes.
That's a straight deduction, and we won't soften it. If a large suite and a private lounge are central to your idea of a good trip, the Signature and Pinnacle ships do that job better.
Volendam's case rests entirely on the route.

San Diego, fall 2026. Destination-focused, longer-itinerary travelers — Alaska, repositioning voyages, Panama Canal transits — who want a relaxed, small-ship evening rather than a resort-scale entertainment complex.

Meals and music across four months
The shortest dining roster in the fleet, on the ship that spends the most days at sea. Both halves of that sentence are true, and they pull against each other.
Provisioning and dining
The list runs to the Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto alongside the main Dining Room, the Lido Market and Dive-In. Tamarind is not fitted to this class and neither is the Grand Dutch Café; both live on larger, newer hulls.
Across a 129-day routing, provisioning does more work than the venue count. Produce and fish come aboard as the ship goes, so variety arrives over the gangway rather than from an extra restaurant.
Book a two-week segment and compare ships on menus alone, though, and the flagships win that comparison outright.
Nightly entertainment
Evenings run on live musicians in small rooms rather than the Music Walk cluster the newer classes carry. For a passenger list settling in for weeks, knowing the band is part of the appeal rather than a consolation.
The 2025 Entertainment Evolution changes — a string ensemble, an expanded Dam Band role, revitalized production shows and soloists chosen for the region being sailed — apply across the fleet. On a routing that crosses six continents, that regional brief has more raw material to work with here than anywhere else.

Usually, yes. Holland America has historically sold segments of its Grand Voyages alongside the full sailing, which is how most working travelers experience them. The way segments are cut varies by edition, so ask before assuming a particular portion is available separately.
Is Volendam too old to book?
She is the oldest ship in the fleet and the interiors show it, and she is not part of the Evolution refit program, which covers the Vista and Signature ships. What she offers instead is scale and reach — a small hull, a quiet passenger load and access to ports larger ships cannot enter. If you want new, this is the wrong ship.
