Boarding a Rhine cruise inAmsterdam
Amsterdam has more than a dozen river berths and no fixed one for most ships. Plan the city first and the quay last — it's usually the final detail to arrive.
- 14–17 minSchiphol to Amsterdam Centraal by train
- 17 berthson De Ruijterkade, directly behind Centraal
- 3:30 pmUniworld's published all-aboard
- €25Rijksmuseum adult ticket, start time booked ahead
In short
Amsterdam in thirty seconds
Your ship ties up on the IJ, the harbour water behind Centraal Station. The likeliest spots are Passenger Terminal Amsterdam to the east and De Ruijterkade directly behind the station; full days push ships out to Coenhaven, across the water to Tolhuis, or to Zaandam.
The berth is set late. A local operator that tracks the quays says ships are 'allocated a berth call by call', and lines usually confirm one to two days before arrival.
Schiphol is the easy part: eight trains an hour to Centraal, from a station directly under the arrivals hall.
Book two nights, not one. The city's two headline museums sell timed tickets well in advance, and a single day leaves no slack for a late flight.
Watch the clock on boarding day. Uniworld's all-aboard here is usually 3:30 pm, so the morning is for one thing, not three.
The berths
The quays on the IJ
The Port of Amsterdam runs a spread of river-cruise quays along the IJ, plus overflow harbours further out. Which one you get depends on the line, the ship's length and the week.
Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade (Uniworld)
East of Centraal in the Eastern Docklands, about 1.5 km from the station. The port lists six berths here for ships up to 110 m, or four for 135 m ships. Uniworld puts S.S. Elisabeth and S.S. Victoria here in 2026, at Piet Heinkade 27; the Mövenpick is next door.
Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, Lüftner/Amadeus
SourceDe Ruijterkade Oost and West
The quay directly behind Amsterdam Centraal. The port lists ten Oost berths for 110–135 m ships and seven more at Ruyterkade West, most with shore power. No berth in the city is closer to the trains.
Lüftner/Amadeus
SourceJavakade and Westerdoksdijk
Javakade is further east on Java-eiland, with two berths for ships up to 110 m. Westerdoksdijk is just west of Centraal, two berths for 135 m ships — River Cruise Advisor timed it at a 19-minute walk or an 8-minute bike ride from the station.

SourceCoenhaven, Tolhuis and Zaandam (overflow and outer berths)
When the central quays fill, ships go to harbour berths such as Coenhaven, Westerhoofd 12, with six berths for 135 m ships, or across the IJ at Tolhuis. Zaandam, north-west of the city, is a starting point in its own right: Uniworld boards River Duchess at Prins Hendrikkade 25-9 on every departure.

All four start or end cruises in Amsterdam, and none publishes its quay; Viking's Day 1 text names no dock. Ask your line for the berth before you book a hotel by the water.

Getting there
Schiphol to the water
Few river embarkations have an easier airport run. The train does most of the work; the last stretch depends on your quay.
Fly into
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol AMS
The train to Centraal is the benchmark run (times below); Forbes puts the Waldorf Astoria on the Herengracht about 25 minutes from AMS.
- Train
Track 3 to Centraal
Trains leave from track 3, in the station below Schiphol Plaza, and reach Centraal in 14 to 17 minutes. Tap in and out with a contactless card or phone at the yellow readers, or buy a ticket at the airport. From Centraal, De Ruijterkade is right behind the station; PTA is about 1.5 km east.

Amsterdam Express 397
Bus 397 — the N97 Niteliner after dark — runs from Schiphol to Amsterdam stations and is covered by the Amsterdam Travel Ticket. A fallback for late arrivals.

Viking, if you bought its air
Viking lists 'Ground transfers with Viking Air purchase' among its Rhine Getaway inclusions. It also sells a two-night Amsterdam pre-extension from $799, or $1,299 for Premium, as published 21 Oct 2026.
Source - Taxi
Taxi for the outer quays
Schiphol publishes no taxi fare or journey time. It earns its place when your ship is at Coenhaven or Zaandam, where the train leaves you short.

- UniworldPublishes its Amsterdam berths but no transfer terms on its port page; ask when you book.
The day before
Before the gangway
Two of Amsterdam's best rooms need a ticket booked weeks out. Do that first, then build the rest of the day around the canals.

The Rijksmuseum, on a booked start time
Open every day of the year, 9:00 to 17:00, and free for under-18s. 'All visitors are required to book a start time', so buy online before you fly.

The Anne Frank House — set a reminder
Tickets are sold only on the museum's own site, and every Tuesday at 10:00 CEST the allocation for six weeks later goes on sale. Adults pay €16.50 including a €1 booking fee. Hours run 9:00 to 22:00 daily, with date exceptions.

Walk the Herengracht to the Golden Bend
The Waldorf Astoria fills six joined 17th-century mansions on the Herengracht near the Golden Bend. That stretch of canal is the postcard city. Walk it before dinner.

Dinner at Spectrum
Spectrum, inside the Waldorf Astoria, is led by chef Sidney Schutte and serves an 11-course wine-paired menu. Peacock Alley handles all-day dining and afternoon tea; the bar is a speakeasy in the old MeesPierson bank vault.

An afternoon at the Guerlain Spa
Three treatment rooms and an indoor pool at the Waldorf Astoria. If you're staying elsewhere, call first — the hotel doesn't publish terms for outside guests.

A canal cruise, the classic first evening
Viking's own Day 1 suggestion is a journey along the canals. Avalon closes its Rhine & Moselle with one, so northbound guests may find it already included.

Things to do in Amsterdam
Three things worth paying for before you land, each solving a timing problem the city sets.
- Evening canal cruiseThe obvious first-evening outing, and the one Viking itself suggests for Day 1.
- Rijksmuseum guided tour with timed entryIt takes care of the mandatory start time and gets you through the highlights in a couple of hours.
- Zaanse Schans windmills half-day tripFits the afternoon before boarding — and if your ship leaves from Zaandam, you're heading that way anyway.

Where to stay
Where to sleep
We cover the city's hotels in depth in our Amsterdam hotel guides. For a river start, three stand out: the Forbes Five-Star Waldorf Astoria on the Herengracht, Sofitel Legend The Grand in the old City Hall, and the Mövenpick next door to Passenger Terminal Amsterdam.
Eastern Docklands / Piet Heinkade
On the IJ, where the big terminal is. The Mövenpick sits right beside Passenger Terminal Amsterdam. Right for a PTA start; a detour if you draw Zaandam.
Canal Ring — the Herengracht
The 17th-century canal houses, with the Waldorf Astoria in six of them. Further from the quays, closer to the reason you came.
Old Centre (Oude Zijde), near Dam Square
Walkable to Centraal and the De Ruijterkade quays behind it. Sofitel Legend The Grand occupies the city's former City Hall on Oudezijds Voorburgwal.

When
Spring is the city's own season on the river. Keukenhof is open 18 March to 9 May 2027, and the tulip sailings that start here are timed to it. Outside spring, the Anne Frank House sets the rhythm. Book the museum slot before the flight, not after.

Quick answers
Amsterdam river cruise questions
Which quay will my ship use?
That depends on the line and the week. Uniworld publishes its berths — Passenger Terminal Amsterdam on Piet Heinkade for S.S. Elisabeth and S.S. Victoria, and Zaandam for River Duchess. Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon and Riverside don't publish theirs. The other quays include De Ruijterkade behind Centraal, Javakade, Westerdoksdijk and Coenhaven.
Why hasn't my line confirmed the berth yet?
Because Amsterdam doesn't fix it far ahead. Berths are allocated call by call and can change at short notice, so a late confirmation is normal, not a warning sign.
What's the simplest way from Schiphol to the ship?
The train from track 3 to Centraal, paid with a contactless card. De Ruijterkade is behind the station; for Passenger Terminal Amsterdam or the outer quays, take a taxi for the last stretch.
Do the big museums need booking?
Yes. The Rijksmuseum asks every visitor to book a start time. The Anne Frank House sells only through its own website, releasing tickets on Tuesdays at 10:00 for visits six weeks out.
How many nights should I spend in Amsterdam first?
Two, if you can. Viking sells its Amsterdam pre-extension as two nights, and the second gives you room for a delayed flight and a timed ticket that won't move. One night covers a museum and a canal, and little else.
What if my cruise ends in Amsterdam instead?
Plenty of Rhine weeks finish here. AmaWaterways spends its last two days in the city, Uniworld disembarks at Arnhem and adds Amsterdam hotel nights, and Avalon closes with a canal cruise. Sailing northbound, save the museum slots for those final days.
