Six hotels, no river

The night before the coach, inBucharest

There is no river view to chase here — the Danube is an hour south. What matters is a good night, a walk to dinner and a hotel the coach can find in the morning.

How we chose

How we chose

Every Bucharest cruise night ends with a coach. We weighted location for that, not for the water. Calea Victoriei is where Celebrity collects its guests, at the Athénée Palace; the Palace of Parliament side faces the road south.

Four of the six hold Michelin Keys from the first global selection, announced 9 October 2025. We used only ratings we could confirm, and in Bucharest that means Michelin, not Forbes.

Airport access counted — Henri Coandă is 16.5 km north of the centre. Price did not. These are ordered by how we would choose, not by rate.

The hotels

Six for the night before, in Bucharest

The grand oneTwo Michelin Keys

Corinthia Grand Hotel du Boulevard Bucharest

The 1873 building was the first hotel in Bucharest with electric lights and an elevator. Corinthia restored the marble staircases, carved columns and statuary and reopened it with 30 suites and the Boulevard 73 ballroom restaurant.

The grand night, full stop — at the corner of Calea Victoriei and Elisabeta Boulevard with everything walkable: the Athenaeum, Revolution Square, the Old Town for dinner. Thirty suites is not many, so hold it early.

InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest

Opened in 1914 on Episcopiei Street as the capital's first major reinforced-concrete building; fully renovated in 2021 and rebranded InterContinental in 2023. JORJ Restaurant, Café Athénée, The English Bar and the restored Le Diplomate ballroom.

The hotel Celebrity includes for its Bucharest night and the one Uniworld names for its Transylvania extension, with 283 rooms looking straight at the Athenaeum. If you want the coach to leave from your lobby, book what the line books.

The sensible splurge

JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel

Rooms run 60 to 150 sqm. Seven restaurants including JW Steakhouse and Cucina, a THAIco SPA Grand and a daylight-lit heated indoor pool; the hotel puts Henri Coandă about 18.7 km and roughly 30 minutes away.

Big and dependable, beside the Palace of Parliament on the south side of town — and that geography is the point. A morning coach bound for Giurgiu or Oltenița is not fighting its way across the centre first, and the rooms start at 60 sqm.

The Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection

Set in the 19th-century Marmorosch-Blank bank building at 2–6 Doamnei Street, with 217 rooms, the Blank restaurant and Vault, a subterranean stone-carved spa, pool, sauna and jacuzzi.

The design pick, with the Old Town on the doorstep and a Belle Époque bank vault to drink in the night before — Lipscani is loud after dark, so ask for a room away from the lanes. We could not confirm a booking link, so there is no button on this card.

Quiet luxuryOne Michelin Key

Epoque Hotel – Relais & Châteaux

42 suites behind a French neo-classical facade near Cișmigiu Park, with the Epoque Spa, a heated indoor pool, hammam and sauna, and L'Atelier serving seasonal, locally sourced cuisine.

The quiet one — an all-suite hideaway on a residential street by the park. It is a short taxi from the Calea Victoriei hotels where the coaches collect, not a walk, so build that into the morning.

The gentler rate

Radisson Blu Hotel Bucharest

462 rooms at Calea Victoriei 63–81 with a 22 m indoor pool and whirlpool and a THAIco Spa. The summer-only NAMI Beach Club has what the Michelin Guide calls the city's largest outdoor pool; Booking.com puts the airport about 18 km away.

The upper-upscale option at a gentler rate, on the same boulevard as the Michelin-Key hotels, with Revolution Square and the Old Town an easy walk. Pick it when the Corinthia is full or the price gap is wide.

Embarkation day

The morning of the coach

  1. 01

Your deadline is the coach, not an all-aboard

No line publishes an embarkation window at Giurgiu or Oltenița. The hotel pickup time in your line's documents is the only clock that matters — the ship waits for its own bus.

  2. 02

Booked your own hotel? Budget an hour and a half

CruiseMapper calls Giurgiu about an hour from the city; a Viator-listed private transfer lists 1 hour 30 minutes to either dock, 'depending on the time of day and traffic'. Plan on the longer figure.

  3. 03

Keep the passport in your hand luggage

The Palace of Parliament refuses entry without a physical passport or national ID card, and the Danube from here runs along the Bulgarian border. Do not let it travel in the suitcase hold of the coach.

Have us plan it

Hotel night and cruise, one plan

We book the night before with the sailing, so the transfer, the all-aboard time and the flight all line up. Tell us the dates and which of these you liked.

  • Usually the same fare as booking direct, and our advice costs you nothing.
  • We compare the lines sailing from Bucharest for your dates, not one brochure.
  • Hotel nights, flights and transfers can go into the same plan.

Quick answers

Bucharest pre-cruise hotel questions

Which Bucharest hotel do the cruise lines use?

Celebrity includes a night at the InterContinental Athénée Palace on its 2028 Bucharest–Budapest sailing, and Uniworld names the same hotel for its Transylvania extension. Emerald and Avalon include a Bucharest night without naming the property.

Is there a hotel on the river?

No. Bucharest is not on the Danube — the ship is at Giurgiu or Oltenița, roughly 60–65 km south. Every hotel here is a city hotel, and the first water you see is from the coach.

How far is Henri Coandă from these hotels?

About 16.5 km north of the centre per World Travel Guide. The JW Marriott puts it at 18.7 km and roughly 30 minutes by road; Booking.com lists the Radisson Blu at about 18 km. The airport train reaches Gara de Nord in about 20 minutes. Authorised taxis are metered at 2.29–3.50 lei per km.

Should I stay near the Old Town or near the Parliament?

Near Calea Victoriei if you want the Michelin-Key hotels and the evening walk to dinner. That is also where the lines collect their guests. Near the Palace of Parliament if the morning coach is your priority — the JW Marriott sits on the south side of the city, the direction of both docks.
