Embarkation city, decoded

Before you board inBudapest

Budapest is the Danube's best sail-in and its least predictable berth — your ship is somewhere on the Pest embankment, and which pier is decided late.

In short

The 30-second version

Your ship ties up along the Pest embankment, most likely somewhere between Margaret Bridge and Liberty Bridge. Celebrity's port guide names three central piers on that stretch and a fourth, Batthyány Square, across the water on the Buda side.

Uniworld is the exception that publishes a street address — Garam utca 4, upriver in District XIII. Every other line leaves the pier to your documents.

The airport is about 13 miles out, a 30 to 50 minute ride depending on which dock you've drawn. Tauck, Viking and AmaWaterways cover that transfer when you buy their air; otherwise the 100E bus or a metered Főtaxi does the job.

One night before sailing is the minimum the lines assume. Two is the number we'd book, because Parliament runs on timed tickets and the baths deserve an unhurried morning.

Embarkation day is a full day, not a write-off. Walk the Dunakorzó that afternoon — it doubles as a recce of your own pier.

The berths

Where the ships tie up

There is no single Budapest cruise terminal. There is a run of embankment piers, and the line you sail decides which one — sometimes the week you arrive.

Garam utca 4, District XIII (Uniworld)

Uniworld's port-locations page lists Garam u. 4, 1133 Budapest for River Duchess, S.S. Beatrice and S.S. Maria Theresa, every departure, with all-aboard at 8:30 pm. The 1133 postcode is the Újlipótváros stretch of the Pest bank. That's upriver of Parliament and the Chain Bridge — not the hotel core.

Akadémia Dock, MAHART International Pier and Vigadó Square Dock (central Pest)

Celebrity's Budapest guide says ships 'generally dock at city-center piers between Margaret Bridge and Liberty Bridge' and names these three. Each sits roughly 0.3 to 0.8 miles from the centre, a 6 to 17 minute walk. Assignments shift with line, ship size and river traffic, and Celebrity confirms yours in pre-cruise documents.

Batthyány Square (Buda bank)

Celebrity's fourth named dock, on the Buda side directly opposite Parliament. It's the one that isn't walkable from the Pest hotels — about 1.3 miles, or a 27-minute walk, by Celebrity's count.

Source

International Boat Station, Belgrád rakpart (Pest bank)

In Your Pocket lists this as 'the dock for international boat and hydrofoil services'. It's on the Pest embankment south of Elisabeth Bridge, with a weekday office open 08:00–18:00. The listing doesn't say which river-cruise lines use it, if any. We're noting it, not recommending you plan around it.

Chain Bridge / InterContinental stretch (passenger reports)

Cruise Critic posters place Viking on the Pest side by the Chain Bridge, in front of the InterContinental. AmaWaterways and Avalon are reported nearer Elisabeth Bridge, Scenic over on the Buda bank. These are passengers talking, not the lines. There are no fixed numbered docks per company.

Treat the berth as provisional until the last day. Celebrity says 'dock assignments can change' and confirms the pier in your pre-cruise documents; even Uniworld, with its published address, tells guests to verify it 24 hours before arrival. Expect to be rafted, too. Celebrity warns you 'may need to walk between vessels to board', and Cruise Critic posters say to assume it.

Getting there

Getting in from the airport

Liszt Ferenc is a short ride by European-capital standards. The choice is less about speed than about who's carrying the bags.

Fly into

Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport BUD

Celebrity's port guide puts the airport 'about 13 miles from the ports, a 30-50 minute trip depending on the dock'; Kempinski's directions call it about 24 km, roughly 15 miles, and 'just 30 minutes' to Erzsébet tér.

  • Line transfer

Let the line do it, if your fare includes it

Tauck includes the ride from the airport or Keleti station to the riverboat — provided you've given accurate flight details at least three weeks ahead. Viking and AmaWaterways include it only when the air is bought through them. Uniworld meets you only if you've arranged its arrival transfer. Know which bucket you're in before you land, not at the kerb.

  • Taxi

    Official Főtaxi on the meter

The airport taxi runs on Budapest's regulated meter. BKK adds an airport base fare of HUF 2,100 from August 2026. Kempinski estimates about HUF 16,000 — roughly EUR 45 — to central Pest depending on traffic; thebettervacation.com, updated 26 Aug 2026, quotes 10,000–11,000 HUF and 30 to 40 minutes. Most taxis take cards, per Celebrity.

  • Bus

100E Airport Express to Deák Ferenc tér

BKK's dedicated airport bus is 2,500 HUF for a single. It runs Terminal 2 to Deák Ferenc tér via Kálvin tér in about 40 minutes, round the clock — every 6 to 10 minutes by day, 30 to 40 at night. Low-floor articulated buses with luggage space. Pay by bankcard on board or in the BudapestGO app. Deák tér is about 350 m from the Kempinski.

  • Bus

200E bus and the M3 metro

The budget route. 200E to Kőbánya-Kispest, then the M3 into the centre, 50 to 70 minutes all in. A single is 450 Ft, or 600 Ft from the driver; you'll need two singles or one 530 Ft transfer ticket. Fine without bags. Less fine with a week's luggage.

What the lines say about transfers

  • TauckTransport from the airport or Keleti station to the riverboat is included if accurate flight details reach Tauck at least three weeks before the tour.
  • Viking River Cruises'Roundtrip airport transfers are included when air is purchased with a cruise or cruisetour package'; otherwise transfers may be purchased separately.
  • AmaWaterwaysAirport-to-ship transfers are included when flights are booked through AmaAir, on standard arrival dates only.
  • UniworldA representative meets you at BUD only 'if you have arranged a Uniworld arrival transfer'; terms are on Uniworld.com/transfers.

The day before

The day before you board

Budapest rewards one timed ticket and one slow afternoon. Book the first before you fly; leave the second unplanned.

  1. 01

Tour Parliament on a timed slot you booked from home

We're not publishing Parliament's hours or prices here — confirm both on the official site when you book. Viator lists a Parliament audio-guided tour from $51 and a half-day city tour with Parliament visit from $74. Celebrity's guide puts the building 'just minutes' from the central piers. The trick is the ticket, not the walk.

  2. 02

    Soak at Széchenyi

Pools open 07:00–19:40 Monday to Thursday, to 21:40 on Friday, and 08:00–19:40 at weekends. Cash desks shut an hour before closing. An adult day ticket with locker runs 13,200 HUF Monday to Thursday, 14,800 HUF Friday and weekends, and 15,800 HUF on holidays and peak dates. The Fast Track ticket (15,200–17,800 HUF) is online only. Same-day tickets at the entrance opposite the Circus are card-only.

Take the funicular up and walk Fisherman's Bastion early

The Sikló climbs from the Buda end of the Chain Bridge to the Castle District in about three minutes. It queues. We Love Budapest's advice is to do the Bastion first thing, then walk down the spiral stairs for the view from below. The Changing of the Guard at Sándor Palace is on the hour. Ruszwurm is the cake shop for krémes.

  4. 04

Walk the Dunakorzó from the Chain Bridge to Elisabeth Bridge

The promenade runs the Pest embankment between the two bridges, lined with hotels and cafés, tram 2 rattling alongside. The bronze Shoes on the Danube memorial is on the same bank. Celebrity lists the promenade among sights minutes from the central piers. That's the point — you're walking past where your ship will be.

  5. 05

An evening cruise, before your own ship does the same thing

Viator's Budapest page lists a 90-minute Danube dinner cruise with the Rajko Folk Orchestra from $56, with a buffet or wine-tasting option. A night sightseeing cruise with a drink starts at $29. Either passes the lit Parliament, Chain Bridge and Buda Castle. You'll see that again from your own deck. Twice is no hardship.

  6. 06

A Hungarian wine flight near the Basilica

We Love Budapest names DiVino, Borkonyha and Tigris as the upscale wine addresses by St. Stephen's — Tigris is Michelin-recommended. Most wine bars will do a tasting platter. Ask for Tokaji aszú, Juhfark or Kadarka. If you'd rather be led, Viator's 'Market to Tavern' food tour with 12+ tasters and wines is $86.

Or skip the crowds and book Kempinski The Spa

Kempinski's press room says its Budapest spa was named Hungary's Best Hotel Spa 2025 at the World Spa Awards, after a redesign. The hotel is on Erzsébet tér, about ten minutes on foot from the Chain Bridge. It's the calmer answer to Széchenyi. Worth it the afternoon before a seven-night sailing.

Extra days, booked ahead

Things to do in Budapest

Three bookable items we'd pre-buy, because each one solves a problem the embarkation city creates.

  • Evening Danube cruise with dinner and live folk musicFrom $56 for 90 minutes on Viator. The lit Parliament sail-past is the view you'll want before your own ship repeats it.
  • Hungarian Parliament audio-guided tourFrom $51 on Viator. A pre-bought tour removes the sell-out risk on a building that runs on timed slots.
  • Market-to-tavern food tour with 12+ tasters and wines$86 on Viator. It folds the Great Market Hall and Hungarian wine into one afternoon, not a second night out.

Where to stay

The night before

We've picked six Budapest hotels for the night before, all on or near the embankment. The Four Seasons Gresham Palace at the Chain Bridge and the InterContinental — where Viking ships are reported to tie up out front — lead the list; the full set is in our Budapest pre-cruise hotels guide.

Belváros-Lipótváros (District V, Pest)

The compact centre inside the Small Boulevard, 'bordered along its western side by the Danube Promenade, lined by luxury hotels' and served by tram 2. Parliament, the Basilica and Vörösmarty tér are all here. So are Celebrity's three named central piers. If you don't know your dock yet, this is the bet that covers the most outcomes.

Castle District and Clark Ádám tér (District I, Buda)

Quieter and hillier, at the foot of the Chain Bridge. Hotel Clark is a one-minute walk from the bridge and the funicular leaves from the same square. The Batthyány Square dock is on this bank, about 1.3 miles from the Pest centre. A Buda base means a taxi to most piers, not a stroll.

Újlipótváros (District XIII, Pest)

The residential embankment where Uniworld publishes its berth at Garam u. 4. A sensible base if you're sailing Uniworld and want to walk to the gangway. Hotels are thinner here. The palaces are back in District V.

Who starts a cruise in Budapest

Lines with published itineraries that start or end here. Each name opens our review.

When

For Christmas sailings, the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas market runs 13 Nov–31 Dec 2026, 11:00–21:00 and to 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Advent Bazilika runs 13 Nov 2026 to 1 Jan 2027. Both dates are per Hungary Unlocked, citing the organisers, updated 20 Oct 2026. On the money side, BKK's airport taxi base fare of HUF 2,100 applies from August 2026 — an older quote you find online will read slightly low. Check market dates against your embarkation date, not your departure date.

Quick answers

Budapest river cruise questions

Where do river cruise ships dock in Budapest?

Mostly along the Pest embankment between Margaret Bridge and Liberty Bridge. Celebrity's port guide names Akadémia Dock, MAHART International Pier and Vigadó Square Dock, plus Batthyány Square on the Buda side; Uniworld publishes Garam u. 4, 1133 Budapest for its ships. Celebrity confirms the exact pier in pre-cruise documents, and it can change.

How do I get from the airport to the ship?

Tauck, Viking (with Viking air) and AmaWaterways (with AmaAir) include it; Uniworld meets you only if you booked its transfer. On your own, the 100E Airport Express is 2,500 HUF to Deák Ferenc tér in about 40 minutes. Or take an official Főtaxi on the meter: Kempinski estimates about HUF 16,000, roughly EUR 45, to the centre, plus a HUF 2,100 airport base fare from August 2026.

Is one night enough before boarding?

It's the floor, not the plan. Viking tells U.S. guests that flights 'depart one day prior to check-in date', so one night is what the lines assume. Uniworld's published all-aboard is 8:30 pm, which gives you a full embarkation day. Two nights fits Parliament, a bath and a Castle District morning without rushing.

Should I stay in Buda or Pest?

Pest, unless you have a reason. District V puts you on the Danube Promenade 'lined by luxury hotels' and within a 6 to 17 minute walk of Celebrity's central piers. Buda is quieter and hillier — Hotel Clark is a minute from the Chain Bridge. The Batthyány Square dock, though, is about 1.3 miles from the Pest centre.

Will my ship be rafted next to another one?

Often, yes. Celebrity says ships 'may raft together at busy piers, so you may need to walk between vessels'. Cruise Critic posters advise assuming you will be. Ships also shift during a stay, so a river view can be blocked for part of it.

Which lines start Danube cruises in Budapest?

Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Uniworld, Emerald, Tauck and Riverside all embark here, with Celebrity joining from 2027. Several of those lines also call here mid-cruise on longer routes, so check whether your sailing starts in Budapest or merely passes through.
