A cathedral at the gangway

A river cruise day inCologne

Few ports put the main event this close. From the Frankenwerft landing the cathedral is under ten minutes on foot, so the real choices are made once you're there — the nave, the tower or a brauhaus.

The call

How the day runs

Cologne is a port of call, not an embarkation city. Viking gives it day 3 of the Rhine Getaway, with an Old Town stroll and the cathedral; AmaWaterways sells a 'Full Day in Cologne' on Rhine & Moselle Fairytales. Avalon and Riverside call as well.

The included walk takes most of the morning and usually starts at the gangway. That leaves the afternoon for the cathedral interior, the tower or a brauhaus — rarely all three.

The landings line the Rhine bank in the centre, with Frankenwerft right below the Old Town. On a busy day your ship may be pushed farther out. One passenger account describes a 10-minute bus ride in, with ship shuttles all day and the last one back at 5:30 pm.

No line says whether it overnights here. Check the day sheet for all-aboard before you plan an evening.

From the ship: Yes from Frankenwerft — a flat walk of under ten minutes to the cathedral; from an outer landing, take the ship's shuttle instead.

In town

What to see in a day

Cologne Cathedral

Since 1 July 2026 tourists pay €12 to enter (€6 reduced, under-14s free). Services, prayer and lighting a candle at the Schmuckmadonna through the north transept stay free. Visiting hours are 10:00–17:45 daily, cut to 13:30–16:30 on Sundays and church holidays.

The tower climb

533 steps and no lift. Allow 30 to 45 minutes. It's a separate ticket from the interior — and on Sundays and holidays the bell chamber stays shut until 14:00.

Source

The Treasury

Sold as its own ticket beside the interior and the tower. It's the one cathedral ticket the CologneCard discounts.

Source

The Old Town riverfront

Frankenwerft sits on the Old Town bank, which is why the included walk can begin at the foot of the gangway. South, the Rheinauhafen gives you a promenade back to the landings.

The Chocolate Museum

'Only a few minutes' walk from the cathedral', with a café over the water. The afternoon answer for anyone who'd rather skip the brauhaus.

A Rhine sightseeing cruise

Viator lists a one-hour cruise from about $23, as published 21 Oct 2026. Worth it only if your ship arrives after dark — otherwise you've just seen the skyline from your own deck.

Eat and drink

Kölsch and the brauhaus rules

Kölsch

The pale local beer, poured in 0.2-litre glasses. Each brauhaus pours one brewery's Kölsch, and the refills keep coming until you lay your coaster over the glass.

Source

Halve Hahn

'Half a chicken' in name only — a buttered rye roll with Gouda and mustard, plus pickles and onions. Standard brauhaus food, not a misprint.

Source

A guided brauhaus walk

Viking has sold a three-beer-hall Brauhaus excursion, at €29 on one reported sailing. Viator lists a 'Legendary Kölsch Brewery Tour' and a guided brewhouse walk from about $23–32, as published 21 Oct 2026.

Quick answers

Cologne on a river cruise: questions

Is Cologne Cathedral free to enter?

Not for sightseeing, since 1 July 2026: tourists pay €12, or €6 reduced, and children up to 13 go free. Attending a service, praying or lighting a candle through the north transept is still free. The tower and the Treasury need their own tickets.

How far is the walk from the ship?

Under ten minutes, flat, from the Frankenwerft landing stage. When the central landings are full, ships can moor farther out and run shuttle buses — about ten minutes each way.

Is there time to climb the tower?

If you have an hour and good knees. It's 533 steps with no lift, and most people take 30 to 45 minutes. On a Sunday or holiday, visitors can't get in until 13:30.

Do any river cruises start or end in Cologne?

Not on Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon or Riverside, which all treat it as a day call. If you're adding a stay, Cologne Bonn (CGN) and Düsseldorf (DUS) are the airports.
