Old town, station or airport

The night before, inFrankfurt

Only one of these six hotels stands on the Main, and it's on the far bank from Uniworld's berth. So choose by arrival: the station side for a train in, Sachsenhausen for calm, the airport if you land the morning you board.

How we chose

How we built the list

The usual first test — a room on the water — has one answer in Frankfurt, the Lindner on the Sachsenhausen embankment. The other five are here for position and character instead.

Where a hotel holds a rating we could confirm, the card names it: a MICHELIN Key, a place in the Michelin selection, the Steigenberger's five stars. Where there isn't one, the card says that too.

We don't rank by rate. Arrival time decides more here than price does.

The hotels

Six for the night before, in Frankfurt am Main

Quiet luxuryOne MICHELIN Key

The Florentin by Althoff Collection

'The beautifully landscaped The Garden Courtyard invites guests to linger and forms the heart and center of the property' — 147 rooms in Sachsenhausen, about 1.4 km from the Hauptbahnhof and 10 km from FRA.

The former Villa Kennedy, reopened around a garden courtyard on the Sachsenhausen side. It's the calm night before a December sailing, not the busy one.

The grand one5-star

Steigenberger Icon Frankfurter Hof

Welcoming guests 'since 1876' at Am Kaiserplatz — 267 rooms and 36 suites, with the Maintower 'only a few steps away'.

Frankfurt's grand address, on Am Kaiserplatz in the centre. It publishes no distance to the river, so plan on a short taxi to the berth with your bags.

Roomers Frankfurt

'We expect big things from German design and Roomers doesn't disappoint' — Gutleutstrasse 85.

Design-led and near the station, for travellers who'd rather a bar than a ballroom. It trades under two brand names in different listings, so check which you're booking.

On the river

Lindner Hotel Frankfurt Main Plaza

On the Sachsenhausen Main embankment, facing the skyline — the opposite bank from Uniworld's berth

118 rooms, suites, maisonette-apartments and penthouses in a tower inspired by 1930s New York, with the New Brick Restaurant and Harry's New York Bar.

The one hotel here with a published place on the Main. No rating to cite; the position is the case.

Near the station

Le Méridien Frankfurt

300 rooms across the Legacy wing and the Palais at Wiesenhüttenplatz 38, about 200 m from the main station, with complimentary entry to the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT for guests.

Two hundred metres from the Hauptbahnhof, so the S-Bahn from the airport delivers you almost to the door. The free Schirn entry is a reason to spend the afternoon in the Old Town.

Near the airport

Hilton Frankfurt Airport

In The Squaire, with a covered walkway to Terminal 1, the ICE long-distance station directly below, and 249 rooms and suites including 'the only presidential suite at Frankfurt Airport'.

For a morning landing or a late connection: walk over from Terminal 1, sleep, then take the train or a taxi to the berth. The airport puts the city centre about 15 minutes away.

Embarkation day

Embarkation-day notes

  1. 01

    An evening all-aboard

Uniworld's Frankfurt all-aboard is 9:00 pm. Check-out comes first. Ask the hotel to hold your bags and use the day.

  2. 02

Taxi, not the S-Bahn, on boarding day

With December luggage, a taxi to the embankment beats any connection, wherever you've slept. Book it when you arrange the bag hold.

  3. 03

    Know the berth number

Uniworld uses two numbered berths at Untermainkai 34, LP2 and LP5, depending on the date. Riverside doesn't publish its berth; ask before you book the hotel.

Have us plan it

Hotel night and cruise, one plan

We book the night before with the sailing, so the transfer, the all-aboard time and the flight all line up. Tell us the dates and which of these you liked.

  • Usually the same fare as booking direct, and our advice costs you nothing.
  • We compare the lines sailing from Frankfurt am Main for your dates, not one brochure.
  • Hotel nights, flights and transfers can go into the same plan.

Quick answers

Frankfurt am Main pre-cruise hotel questions

Which hotel is nearest Uniworld's berth?

None publishes a walking time to the Untermainkai. The Steigenberger, Roomers and Le Méridien are on the city-centre side, where a short taxi is the simplest way to the ship.

Is there a hotel with a river view?

The Lindner Main Plaza, on the Sachsenhausen embankment, looks back across the Main to the skyline. None of the others claims a river view.

Should I sleep at the airport instead?

Only if you land the morning you board or connect late. The Hilton is linked to Terminal 1 by a covered walkway, and the S-Bahn into the city takes about ten minutes.

Which one would you book for a single night?

With a December market on, the Steigenberger Icon Frankfurter Hof, for the centre. The Florentin if you'd rather a garden than a square. The Lindner if the view is the point.
