One day, two villages

A river cruise day throughMelk and the Wachau

The abbey is the reason to stop and the valley after it is the reason to stay on deck — a river ship gives you both between breakfast and dinner.

The call

How the lines split the day

This is one day, not three. Ships work the Wachau between Melk and Krems in daylight, pairing a morning stop with an afternoon one and sailing the valley in between.

The pairing changes by line. Uniworld takes Melk Abbey in the morning and Dürnstein later; Riverside does Dürnstein first, has you back aboard for lunch, then cruises to Melk for the abbey. AmaWaterways docks at Weissenkirchen instead and sells the day as 'Sail Strudengau and Wachau Valley', and Viking's Danube Waltz stops at Krems for Göttweig Abbey — so check which village your itinerary gives you.

The included choice is usually the abbey tour, a Dürnstein village walk or a Wachau bike ride. Uniworld's ride is about 20 miles between the two towns, and it replaces the abbey — one or the other.

No line names its berth in Melk or Dürnstein, and none overnights in the valley. River Cruise Advisor says ships tie up near the action in Melk, with the town about 15 minutes across on foot and the abbey uphill from it. Some ships give Dürnstein only a half day, so ask the cruise manager before you commit to the castle climb.

From the ship: Dürnstein is a flat few-block walk from the river on cobbled lanes; Melk town is walkable from the berth but the abbey sits on a bluff, so the last stretch is uphill, and the castle hike above Dürnstein is steep.

In town

What the day is for

Melk Abbey

Benedictine since 1089 and open daily April–October, 9:00–17:30 with last admission at 17:00. The tour takes in the Marble Hall, the Imperial Corridor, the library and the abbey museum; the church can be seen without a tour. Adults paid €19.50 with a guide or €16 without, at prices published to 31 March 2026.

The library and the Marble Hall

Some 80,000 volumes in the library. The Marmorsaal's pilasters are faced in red marble under a Paul Troger ceiling, and the Altane balcony between the two rooms looks straight down the Danube valley — the one view in the abbey that is about the river, not the building.

Source

The Wachau sailing

UNESCO inscribed the valley in 2000 for its dry-stone walls, terraced vineyards, apricot orchards and free-flowing river. The stretch runs 36 km (22 mi) from Melk to Krems. Be on deck for it, not at lunch.

Dürnstein's blue tower

You spot the 15th-century Stiftskirche from the river by its blue Baroque tower, which Travel Agent Central ranks among the finest landmarks on the Danube. Uniworld's 'Picture-Perfect Dürnstein' walk finishes here with a tasting.

Source

The castle ruin above Dürnstein

The Kuenringerburg is where Richard the Lionheart was held after the Third Crusade. The climb is steep. Allow 90 minutes to two hours round trip with time at the top, and wear real shoes — this is not a tavern-lunch kind of walk.

Aggstein and Spitz, from the rail

Burgruine Aggstein, an early-12th-century castle ruin, stands on the right bank about 15 km downstream of Melk. Spitz, first recorded in 830, sits among vineyards on the west bank roughly 17 km from Krems. Neither needs a tour; both need you outside.

Beyond the town

The other ways to spend it

Biking the Wachau

Uniworld's 'Let's Go' option rides about 20 miles between Dürnstein and Melk on the valley cycle path, and Riverside offers an e-bike ride from Dürnstein. Either replaces the abbey tour, so pick one.

Source

Göttweig Abbey from Krems

Viking's Danube Waltz calls at Krems rather than Melk and visits Göttweig for its ceiling frescoes, grand staircase, library and church. Emerald also names Göttweig on its Wachau day.

Source

Artstetten Castle or Schallaburg

Riverside offers Artstetten Castle as its alternative to the abbey. Schallaburg, a Renaissance castle about 5 km south of Melk with a terracotta courtyard, opens April–October at €10 for adults if you are exploring on your own.

Eat and drink

Apricots and the two grapes

Wachau apricots (Marille)

Apricots are big business in Dürnstein — dumplings, jam, schnapps — and the orchards are part of why UNESCO listed the valley in the first place.

Source

Grüner Veltliner and Riesling

Both are still grown on the steep terraces you sail past. Dürnstein's wine taverns pour them by the glass a few blocks from the dock.

Source

A wine-estate tasting

Uniworld's 'Dürnstein Wine Estate Visit with Tasting' is a no-extra-cost choice on its Danube itineraries; Riverside includes a Wachau tasting as an option.

From the lines’ published itineraries, October 2026. Each name opens our review of the line.

When

Ships sail the Wachau roughly March to December. The abbey's summer hours of 9:00–17:30 run April–October; from 3 November to 28 February it is guided tours only on weekdays, at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:00, and from March 2026 weekday visits are guided-only year-round — so a Christmas-market cruise gets a set tour time, not a wander. The abbey closes the afternoon of 24 December. Apricot blossom is April and the harvest is July; local Wachau boats run mid-April to October only.

Quick answers

Melk and the Wachau on a river cruise: questions

Do river cruises stop at both Melk and Dürnstein?

Often, and on the same day — Uniworld and Riverside pair them with the Wachau sailing in between. AmaWaterways docks at Weissenkirchen and Viking at Krems instead, so check your itinerary for which village you get.

How long is the Melk Abbey visit?

A morning or an afternoon, depending on the line. The route covers the Marble Hall, the Imperial Corridor, the library and the museum, and the church is open without a guide. Weekday visits are guided-only from March 2026.

Can I hike to the Dürnstein castle ruin on a port day?

Only if the ship stays long enough. The round trip with time at the top runs 90 minutes to two hours, and the climb is steep. Some boats give Dürnstein a half day, so confirm the all-aboard time before you start up.

When should I be on deck?

For the whole 36 km between Melk and Krems. Terraced vineyards, the Aggstein ruin and Spitz pass on either bank, and the lines schedule it in daylight because that is the point of the day.
