Nawiliwili in brief
Nawiliwili is the harbor below Līhuʻe, Kauai’s county seat. The state tourism board calls it the island’s main commercial shipping center and cruise port.
Ships tie up at the pier. No tender, no lottery for the first boat ashore — you walk down the gangway and you’re on Kauai.
Pride of America makes this an overnight.
Pride of America’s reported winter 2026–27 schedule, for sailings from October 3, 2026 through March 27, 2027, includes an overnight Nawiliwili call, arriving Thursday at 8 a.m. and departing Friday at 2 p.m.
These hours come from Cruise Hive’s reporting on NCL’s guest notification, not a current NCL itinerary — confirm your sailing’s itinerary before booking independent activities.
If those hours hold, that’s about 30 hours on the island. A little less than the Maui overnight earlier in the week, and far more than a day stop. All-aboard on Friday is earlier than departure, and the ship sets it.
That’s why a rental car makes sense here: you get a full Thursday, an evening, and a short Friday morning.
Other lines call too, mostly on longer Hawaii round trips from the West Coast.
Their hours vary by ship — check your own, not Pride’s.
Then there’s the storm.
Hurricane Lowell hit Kauai in early September 2026. By September 16 the Department of Land and Natural Resources had closed all its Kauai lands, and most state parks are still shut.
Its October 13 release keeps Kōkeʻe and Waimea Canyon State Parks closed until further notice, citing extensive damage. The road up to Kōkeʻe stays barricaded as well.
That takes the island’s best-known drive off the table for now.
It doesn’t take Kauai off the table.
Hāʻena State Park on the north shore reopened October 15, and the Wailua River is open for the Fern Grotto boats.
Kalapaki, the helicopters and the ranch tours don’t hang on a state park reopening — they’re a beach by the pier and private businesses, not park concessions.
So the job is sorting what’s running from what isn’t, then picking one big thing for Thursday.
Our Nawiliwili shore excursion guide does that sorting tour by tour.
On foot from the pier
The beach sits beside the harbor, with the Kauai Marriott on it and bodysurfers and paddleboarders in the water. We’d call it roughly a ten-minute walk — our estimate, since no official figure is published.
Both shopping centers are an easy walk from the ship. Food, a few shops, a bathroom that isn’t on the ship — that’s the range.
Roughly 2 miles, and a road walk, not a stroll — take a taxi, a rideshare or your rental car. The Kauai Museum is the main reason to go.
No rental desk sits on the pier. A Hawaii rental broker says Payless, Budget and Avis shuttle cruise passengers when a ship is in — but their own Līhuʻe Airport pages don’t mention it, and Budget’s says to arrange any pickup 24 hours ahead. Call the counter before you sail.
Mainline fares are $2.00 again (the storm waiver ended October 1). Not one of the six route schedules we read — 70, 100, 200, 400, 500 and 800 — names a harbor stop, the 900/950 express isn’t running, and there’s no bus on Sundays. Use it from Līhuʻe, not from the gangway.
Taxis serve the port, and Uber and Lyft both operate here — but we found no published taxi fare for Kauai, so we don’t print one. Ask the price before a long ride to the north shore.
The beach, then the island
The first four are close: the beach and the malls on foot, the museum and Kilohana a short drive into Līhuʻe. Kilohana is a restored 1930s plantation estate, and its luau is the one NCL sells.
Kipu Ranch and the Wailua River are each a short drive. Hanalei and Hāʻena are a long one up the north shore — the county bus takes about 88 minutes to Hanalei from its first stop at Kauai Community College.
The Nā Pali cliffs are seen from a boat, a helicopter, or the first two miles of the Kalalau Trail. Waimea Canyon stays on the list because it’s the island’s headline sight, not because you can go this month.
Which sailings call here
Nawiliwili is the last island stop — the finale, not an afterthought — on Norwegian’s Pride of America, the year-round seven-day loop out of Honolulu that calls at Kahului, Hilo and Kona first. Gangwaze’s November 2026 schedule shows 16 ship-days here, and Pride fills 8 of them — four Thursday-Friday overnights, not eight separate calls. Norwegian Spirit, Princess, Holland America and Carnival make up the rest, and Azamara turns up in January. The state’s own schedule sits on Hawaii PortCall, which we couldn’t open. Those other lines mostly reach Hawaii on longer round trips from the mainland. For how the whole Hawaii circuit fits together, start with our Hawaii & South Pacific cruise guide.

Tour by tour — the Fern Grotto boat, the helicopters, the Nā Pali catamarans and a north-shore drive — lives on its own page. This one stays at port level.

Waimea Canyon is shut for now, and a morning Nā Pali sail fights Pride of America’s schedule. Here’s what’s open, what fits your hours, and what we’d book.

Start with the closures — they change week to week.
Here’s where things stand as of October 19, 2026, going by the newest notices we found — DLNR’s of October 13 and the County’s of October 8.
Closed until further notice: Kōkeʻe and Waimea Canyon State Parks, Kōkeʻe Road, and all camping on Kauai.
DLNR adds that “all other Kauaʻi state parks remain closed” — Polihale included, though the release doesn’t name it.
Waimea Canyon Drive is murkier. HDOT closed it above the lower junction on September 16, per Hawaii News Now, and we couldn’t find a newer HDOT notice reopening that stretch.
Hāʻena reopened October 15 for day use, with its shuttle back.
You can hike to Hanakāpīʻai Beach and Falls, not past the two-mile point of the Kalalau Trail.
The Wailua River reopened September 21, with limits. Individual kayakers can’t enter Fern Grotto, Uluwehi (Secret) Falls is closed, and DLNR names Smith’s Motor Boat Tours as cleared to use the grotto landing.
Many county parks reopened September 16.
The County’s October 8 update still lists Salt Pond closed; its September 18 update had Hāʻena, Black Pot and Poʻipū shut too, and the later one doesn’t mention them.
Check the Division of State Parks’ Important Park Notices page and the County’s recovery updates the week you sail.
They’re the source, not your excursion brochure.
If you want the north shore, book Hāʻena early.
Out-of-state visitors need a reservation from gohaena.com. Slots open 30 days ahead at midnight Hawaii time and often go fast.
Parking is $10 a vehicle per timeslot plus $5 entry per person.
The shuttle from Princeville or Waipā is $40 for ages 16 and up and includes entry.
Entry is domestic, and it’s simple on Pride of America.
Kauai is in the US, so there’s no customs or immigration stop here. Pride of America’s loop stays inside Hawaii, so nothing foreign applies.
Foreign-flagged ships are a different case: US Customs and Border Protection says they may not carry passengers just between US ports, which is why their Hawaii sailings work a foreign port into the trip.
That’s the line’s problem, not yours — just check its document rules for the foreign stop.
Money is US dollars — and the bus wants exact fare.
Bring a little cash if you plan to ride. Fares are $2.00 again since October 1, and the county says no change is given.
Weather: hurricane season isn’t over.
The Central Pacific season runs June 1 to November 30. NOAA’s May 2026 outlook gave a 70% chance of an above-normal year.
Ruby Princess skipped Nawiliwili entirely on September 22 because of the storm’s impact.
Calls this late in the season can still change, so keep your plans refundable where you can.
Winter brings its own sea state. Capt Andy’s notes swells are more common in winter and spring, and calmer in summer.

Nawiliwili FAQ
Where do cruise ships dock in Nawiliwili?
At Nawiliwili Harbor, a commercial harbor run by the Hawaii DOT Harbors Division. Ships dock at the pier, so there’s no tender.
Can I walk from the ship to Kalapaki Beach?
Yes. Kalapaki sits beside the harbor, roughly ten minutes on foot by our estimate, with the Harbor Mall and Anchor Cove shops on the way.
Līhuʻe town is a different story: about 2 miles, and better by car.
Is Waimea Canyon open after Hurricane Lowell?
Not as of October 19, 2026. DLNR’s latest release, dated October 13, says both parks “remain closed until further notice due to extensive damage,” and its notices page keeps Kōkeʻe Road closed.
Some cruise lines still list Waimea Canyon tours. Ask your line what the tour does this week before you pay for it, and check dlnr.hawaii.gov’s Important Park Notices yourself.
How long does Pride of America stay in Kauai?
For sailings from October 3, 2026 through March 27, 2027, Cruise Hive reports an overnight: arrive Thursday at 8 a.m., depart Friday at 2 p.m. That’s about 30 hours.
Those hours come from reporting on NCL’s guest notification, not a current NCL itinerary. Confirm your sailing in your NCL app — and remember all-aboard is earlier than departure.
Do rental car companies pick up at the cruise pier?
Some do, by a broker’s account. Discount Hawaii Car Rental lists Payless, Budget and Avis as shuttling when a ship is in — Alamo and Thrifty/Dollar don’t, and Enterprise typically doesn’t.
The agencies’ own Līhuʻe pages don’t mention cruise pickups. Ring the counter a day ahead to book yours.
Can I take the bus from the cruise port?
Not easily. The Kauai Bus costs $2.00, but none of the route schedules we read names a harbor stop, and there’s no Sunday service — you’d need a ride into Līhuʻe first.
Do I need a reservation for Hāʻena State Park and Keʻe Beach?
Yes, if you’re not a Hawaii resident. Book on gohaena.com, where slots open 30 days ahead: $10 to park plus $5 a person, or $40 for the shuttle for ages 16 and up.
The park reopened October 15, 2026. Day hikes to Hanakāpīʻai are open; the Kalalau Trail past two miles is closed.
Do I need a passport for a Nawiliwili cruise stop?
Not for the stop itself — it’s a US port, and on Pride of America’s Hawaii-only loop nothing foreign applies.
On a foreign-flagged ship, your itinerary includes a foreign port, so follow your line’s document rules.
