Cathedral side or island side

The night before, inRegensburg

Regensburg gives you a choice most Danube cities don't. Sleep beside the cathedral, or across the Stone Bridge on an island in the river with the old town as your view. Either way the Donaulände quay is a walk, not a taxi.

How we chose

How we chose

Proximity came first. The cruise berths are on the Donaulände at the edge of the old town, so we looked for hotels that say in their own words how close they are to the river or the Stone Bridge. A real view counts where one exists — SORAT publishes its distances, Bischofshof describes its rooms, and we quote both.

Then a rating we could confirm from the hotel's own site, with Booking.com and one third-party guide as fallbacks. We flag the one card where the facts come from a third-party guide. Airport access here is the ÜFEX from the Hauptbahnhof, so one station-quarter hotel made the cut for that alone.

We don't rank by price. The order is the one we'd walk a client through — cathedral first, river second, station third.

The hotels

Six for the night before, in Regensburg

The grand one4-star per the hotel's own site

Hotel Bischofshof am Dom

Rooms with ‘a view of the Stone Bridge’ and excursion boats ‘waiting for you on the nearby Danube’ — the hotel publishes no distance.

87 individual rooms and suites 'embedded in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Regensburg', DomSuites from 45 m², and a restaurant and beer garden of Bavarian hospitality.

The address beside the cathedral, and the one we'd book first — ask for a room facing the Stone Bridge, which the hotel offers and which is the view the city is known for. The beer garden handles the night-before dinner without a reservation elsewhere.

On the river'First class', in the hotel's words

SORAT Insel-Hotel Regensburg

On the Danube island Oberer Wöhrd: Stone Bridge 100 m, Marc-Aurel-Ufer landing stage 600 m, old town 500 m

75 rooms in the listed former J.L.L. Brandner crafts manufactory, art déco interiors, the Brandner restaurant with a Danube terrace and a lobby bar with balcony terrace.

The river pick: you look back across the water at the bridge and the old-town skyline, and the walk to the quay is flat. The hotel lists the station at 2 km, so this is the choice for a lazy morning, not a dawn train.

Near the airport train

Eurostars Park Hotel Maximilian

'A 19th-century Bavarian palace in the historic center of Regensburg', 52 rooms at Maximilianstraße 28, 250 m from the central railway station; breakfast only, no lunch or dinner restaurant.

The grand façade at a gentler rate, and the shortest walk to the ÜFEX — if your flight home leaves Munich early, or you land late, the 250 m to the station earns its keep. Dinner is elsewhere; the hotel serves breakfast only.

The design pick

Hotel Orphée (Grand Hotel Orphée / Petit / Andreasstadel)

Three houses grown out of a 40-year-old French restaurant and bistro in the old town — Wim Wenders writes of 'the Thonet Viennese Coffeehouse chairs and tables', mirrors and wood-panelled walls; the Andreasstadel house is in Stadtamhof.

The design choice, on Untere Bachgasse, with the bistro downstairs for the night-before dinner and three houses in three different moods — the Andreasstadel house puts you across the bridge in Stadtamhof. No rating is published, so judge it on the rooms, not a star count.

Quiet luxury

Hotel Kaiserhof am Dom

'Directly opposite the mighty twin towers of the Regensburg Cathedral', in the city centre.

Quiet, family-run and central at a modest rate, with no spa and no river view — the cathedral across the lane is the amenity. For a one-night stop before a 9:00 pm all-aboard, that's enough.

The sensible splurge

Altstadthotel Arch

Family-owned old-town hotel on Haidplatz 4.

On the square that hosts the Lucrezia Christmas market, at a gentler old-town rate. Our one sentence about it comes from a third-party guide, not the hotel, so treat the card as a lead and read the current listing before you book.

Embarkation day

Night-before practicalities

  1. 01

Checkout to all-aboard is most of a day

Uniworld's all-aboard at D7 is 9:00 pm for every 2026 Regensburg departure. Use the gap: the Wurstkuchl opens at 10:00, the Strudel boat loop runs from the blue pavilion by the bridge, and on a Sunday the Domspatzen sing in the cathedral.

  2. 02

    The walk to the quay

No hotel or city page publishes a hotel-to-berth distance. What's published: SORAT puts the Marc-Aurel-Ufer landing stage at 600 m, and bayernhafen puts the cruise berths at the edge of the old town with coach pick-up at the quay. From the cathedral quarter, plan on a short walk with bags or a very short taxi.

  3. 03

    Left luggage isn't published

The city's at-a-glance guide doesn't mention left luggage. Ask your hotel to hold bags after checkout. If your berth has moved to the commercial harbour downstream — the overflow when the Donaulände is full — take a taxi rather than walk.

Have us plan it

Hotel night and cruise, one plan

We book the night before with the sailing, so the transfer, the all-aboard time and the flight all line up. Tell us the dates and which of these you liked.

  • Usually the same fare as booking direct, and our advice costs you nothing.
  • We compare the lines sailing from Regensburg for your dates, not one brochure.
  • Hotel nights, flights and transfers can go into the same plan.

Quick answers

Regensburg pre-cruise hotel questions

Which Regensburg hotel is closest to the cruise berths?

None publishes a distance to the Donaulände. SORAT Insel-Hotel gives 600 m to the Marc-Aurel-Ufer landing stage and 100 m to the Stone Bridge; Bischofshof says excursion boats wait 'on the nearby Danube'. The cathedral quarter and the island are both a short walk.

Is the island hotel awkward for the airport train?

A little. SORAT lists the station at 2 km, against 250 m for the Eurostars Park Hotel Maximilian. For a dawn ÜFEX to Munich Airport, stay by the station; for the view, stay on the island and take a taxi.

Which hotel for an Advent cruise?

Altstadthotel Arch sits on Haidplatz, home of the Lucrezia-Markt (27 November to 23 December; the tourism page gives no year). The Thurn und Taxis Romantic market is in the palace grounds. Book early — Regensburg lists five markets and the hotels fill.

Do any of these hotels have a spa or pool?

None of the six publishes one. Kaiserhof lists no spa; SORAT's amenities are the Danube terrace and the bar. If a pool matters, it's worth asking the Bischofshof or Orphée directly before you book.
