Landing on sail day?

Put in your landing and the ship’s departure from your documents. MSC closes check-in two hours before sailing; we test against that and our own margin.

The short answer

If you can connect into Genoa Cristoforo Colombo (GOA), do. The port authority puts it about 5 km from the terminals, MSC says about 15 minutes by car, and the taxi is a fixed €25 a car, per a January 2025 report.

The catch is that we found no nonstop from the US. You’ll connect through Munich, Amsterdam, Rome or another hub. Or you fly nonstop to Milan Malpensa, which United serves daily from Newark, and come down by coach or train — about three hours.

With cruise bags and a connection, land the day before, not the morning you sail.

Connect into GOA if

  • You want the shortest ride to the ship
  • You’re happy with one European connection
  • You land on sail day with a big margin

Fly into Milan Malpensa if

  • You want a nonstop from the US
  • You’re booking MSC’s coach transfer
  • You’re spending a night in Milan first

The Ride

What the ride costs

The taxi row is per car, as the 2025 fare report prints it; Volabus and MSC’s transfers are per person.

Travelers
Taxi, airport to the cruise terminal, fixed fare (2025 report)—
Volabus to Piazza Principe, per person (2025 report)—
MSC transfer from GOA, per person (MSC, Summer 2025)—
MSC transfer from Milan Malpensa, per person (MSC, Summer 2025)—

One way, in euros, as published; read October 19, 2026. Taxis add €2 a person at night or on holidays, per the 2025 report. MSC’s transfer prices are its Summer 2025 table, the latest we found.

A rental car makes sense only if you’re touring first. If you are, MSC’s garage at Ponte dei Mille prices the week, from €70 for four days.

Sail-Day Landing

Landing on sail day? Check your timing

MSC closes check-in and boarding two hours before departure and wants you there at least three hours before. The first two rows are MSC’s; the last is our own margin. Use your line’s time from your documents.

  • MSC’s check-in cut-offMSC: check-in and boarding close two hours before the ship sails.—
  • MSC’s latest arrivalMSC: be at the port no later than three hours before sailing.—
  • A ride in with time to spareOur rule of thumb, not a line's: land at least 4 hours before the ship leaves.—

Flying from the US means a connection, and a missed one ends the cruise before it starts. We’d land the day before; four of our twelve hotels are within about 350 m of Ponte dei Mille.

A night in Genoa first

Land a day early. Walk down to the ship.

We ranked twelve hotels for a Genoa cruise, four of them by Piazza Principe, a short walk from the terminal. Tell us the flight and the ship, and we’ll pick the night that fits.

Coming Home

The morning you’re back

MSC says disembarkation can take up to three hours after the ship docks. The airport is about 15 minutes by car, per MSC, and the taxi is a fixed €25. Enter your flight and when you expect to be ashore; the planner sets out the ride and the wait.

Partner links may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.

Entry, Bags and Milan

Entry rules, bags and Milan

Entry. The US State Department wants your passport valid for at least three months beyond your departure from the Schengen area, six recommended, with two blank pages, and no visa for stays under 90 days. The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully running since April 10, 2026. It takes a photo and fingerprints at your first Schengen border, which for most US cruisers is the connecting airport, not Genoa. ETIAS isn’t needed yet; Poland’s government said on September 30, 2026, that it’s scheduled to launch in 2027.

Bags. MSC takes your bags at the terminal’s drop-off before check-in and delivers them to the cabin in the late afternoon or evening. We found no luggage storage at the terminals, so pack what you need for the first evening in your carry-on.

Milan. Malpensa Express runs to Milano Centrale every 30 minutes, about 51 minutes, €15 one way, per Trenord. Its own line page still prints €13, so check when you buy. From Centrale, trains run on to Genova Piazza Principe, about 500 m from the terminal, per MSC. For the terminals and the lines, see our Genoa cruise guide.

Fly In Early

Flying in the day before

One night in Genoa takes the clock off sail day, and after a connection from the US you’ll want it. Four of our twelve sit by Piazza Principe, about 300 to 350 m from Ponte dei Mille in a straight line.

None runs a shuttle to the ship. Palazzo Grillo publishes an airport transfer at €40 a car, per Hotels.com, and Meliá lists one without a price.
