Fly into Tahiti Faa’a International (PPT). It’s close. Our Papeete guide puts it about 5 km from Te Anuanua, and Paul Gauguin calls the drive about 20 minutes.
Take a taxi. Fares are government maximums, not a meter’s whim — 1,000 XPF to start, 160 XPF a km from 06:00 to 20:00 and 260 XPF a km at night, plus 100 XPF for each bag over 5 kg, per the DTT. By our arithmetic the 04:10 arrival runs about 2,300 XPF a car before bags — an estimate, not a fare anyone publishes.
The real problem is the clock, not the cab. Air Tahiti Nui’s TN101 lands at 04:10 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and Paul Gauguin opens boarding at 15:00 — and its documents say it can’t take bags before then. Buy the hotel night before you land.
Take a taxi if
- You land on the 04:10 or 05:20 red-eye; it’s the night rate either way
- You’re carrying cruise bags
- You booked a hotel that lists no shuttle
Use a shuttle or line transfer if
- Your hotel confirms a shuttle: Tahiti Tourisme’s entry describes a free one at Fare Suisse, by arrangement; the Royal Tahitien arranges paid transfers; Hotels.com lists a paid one at Hotel Tahiti Nui
- Your line sold you a hotel package with transfers; Regent’s February 2027 voyage includes one for Concierge Suites and up
- You’d rather not haggle over a fare at 04:00

We couldn’t find a Princess or Celebrity sailing that starts or ends in Papeete in 2026–27. Princess’s 2027 South Pacific voyages call in French Polynesia but begin in Sydney, Auckland, Los Angeles or Vancouver, on the listing we read. Regent includes a pre-cruise hotel night with transfers for Concierge Suites and up on its February 2027 voyage, per rssc.com.

What the ride costs, roughly
The taxi rows are our estimates from the DTT’s maximums and about 5 km, per car, before bags. The shuttle and bus rows are per person, as their sources print them.
| Taxi at night, 20:00 to 06:00 (our estimate from DTT maximums) | — |
| Taxi by day, 06:00 to 20:00 (our estimate from DTT maximums) | — |
| Royal Tahitien transfer, which the hotel arranges, at the price Hotels.com lists; confirm | — |
| Hotel Tahiti Nui shuttle, as Hotels.com lists it; confirm with the hotel | — |
| Tere Tahiti bus, prepaid (Radio1 Tahiti) | — |
One way, in CFP francs. Taxis add 100 XPF for each bag over 5 kg and 500 XPF from the fifth passenger, per the DTT; the fare on the card in the car is the legal maximum. Tahiti Tourisme’s entry describes Fare Suisse’s shuttle as free, subject to arrangements; confirm it with the guesthouse.
The bus is a commuter network, and we couldn’t confirm which line serves the airport on an official page. With cruise bags at 04:00, take the taxi.
Landing on sail day? Check your timing
On a Paul Gauguin sailing, boarding opens at 15:00 and must be complete by 17:00 for an 18:30 departure, per the line’s FAQ as our guide quotes it. The first row is the line’s; the second is our own margin. Use your line’s times.
- Paul Gauguin’s all-aboardBoarding complete by 17:00 for an 18:30 sailing.—
- A ride in with time to spareOur rule of thumb, not a line's: land at least 4 hours before the ship leaves.—
Here the risk runs the other way. The 04:10 red-eye clears every row by hours, and that’s the problem: you’re on the island with bags long before anyone will take them. French bee’s San Francisco flight lands at 05:20, per schedule data. United’s lands at 18:55, but Tahiti Tourisme says that seasonal service runs only to October 24, 2026. Book the night before you land.
Buy the night before. Sleep, then board.
We ranked ten hotels for a Papeete sailing, four of them within about 400 m of Te Anuanua. Tell us the flight and the ship, and Seabound Journeys will pick the night that fits.
The morning you’re back
Paul Gauguin disembarks from 07:00 and is done by 09:00, per its FAQ as our guide quotes it, and lets you leave the evening before. With an evening flight, that’s a long day with bags. Enter your flight and when you expect to be ashore; the planner sets out the ride and the wait.
Partner links may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.
Entry rules, and the hours before boarding
Entry. For US citizens the State Department asks for a passport valid six months, at least one blank page and a return ticket, and needs no visa for stays under 90 days, with no more than 90 days in any six months. The 12-page emergency passport isn’t accepted for visa-free entry. The page lists a currency limit of 1,200,000 XPF (€10,000) on the way in and out. That page was last updated April 17, 2025; the State Department’s current advisories index still links French Polynesia to it, at Level 1, reissued December 2, 2024.
French Polynesia isn’t in Schengen. The French Interior Ministry says Schengen rules apply only to France’s European territory, and French Polynesia has its own entry rules, set by an order of December 29, 2011. So days here don’t count against a European trip.
The gap. We couldn’t find a published day-use rate at any of our ten. Oceania lists day rooms in its post-cruise programme, with no price shown. Hotels.com lists paid early check-in at Kon Tiki, a 13:00 check-in at Hotel Tahiti Nui and an early breakfast at Maitai Express (05:00 on Hotels.com, 06:00 on a trade listing) — platform listings, so confirm with the hotel before you build a morning on them.
Don’t plan on dropping bags at the pier. Paul Gauguin’s pre-cruise documents say luggage storage isn’t available there and the line can’t take bags before 15:00 — they send you to the storage at Faa’a airport. Other lines set their own rules, so ask yours — in writing. For the terminal and the lines, see our Papeete cruise guide.
Flying in the day before
One night in Papeete is the plan, not a luxury. Off the 04:10 red-eye, a room you’ve paid for since the night before is a check-in you can count on — the only one.
Four of our ten are within about 400 m of Te Anuanua by our pins. Three are by the airport or on the lagoon at Faa’a, and the Airport Motel is across the road from arrivals.
Six for the night before
Our top six, with the straight-line distance from Faa’a to each. All ten are on the hotels page.
Airport to hotel
What each of our ten says, or what a listing says for it, about getting from the airport to its door. Hilton and IHG say they have no shuttle. Fare Suisse’s free shuttle is a Tahiti Tourisme description, by arrangement; the Royal Tahitien arranges paid transfers; Hotel Tahiti Nui’s is on Hotels.com. Confirm any of them with the hotel.

Not for stays under 90 days, per the State Department: a passport valid six months, a blank page and a return ticket. French Polynesia isn’t in Schengen, per the French Interior Ministry.
Can I board my cruise right after the 04:10 flight?
Not until boarding opens; on Paul Gauguin that’s 15:00, and its documents say it can’t take bags before then. We couldn’t find a published day-use rate, so book the night before you land.
Can I leave my luggage at the Papeete cruise terminal?
Not on Paul Gauguin: its pre-cruise documents say luggage storage isn’t available at the pier and point you to storage at Faa’a airport. Ask your hotel, or your own line.
