Fly into Tromsø Airport, Langnes (TOS). Visit Tromsø puts it about 5 km from the centre and about 10 minutes by car, and you have three ways in: the airport express bus, a city bus and a taxi.
The airport express takes about 15 minutes and stops at Prostneset. It was NOK 125 one way on the timetable that ran to 31 March 2026, per Best Arctic; we haven’t seen the 2026–27 fares. A taxi to the centre is about NOK 280 on weekday daytimes and more at other times, per a University of Tromsø page from April 2025.
Which quay matters more than which ride. Most voyages that start here board at Prostneset, in the centre; ships over 230 m are sent to Breivika, about 4 km north, where city bus 42 is the link.
Take the airport bus if
- Your ship is at Prostneset; the bus stops there
- Your hotel is near Storgata, Prostneset or Scandic Ishavshotel
- It’s one or two of you
Take a taxi if
- There are three or four of you to share it
- You land on sail day
- Your ship is at Breivika and you have heavy bags

Hurtigruten’s pre-booked transfers use the red Bussring airport buses: unaccompanied, on a fixed schedule, with a voucher, and no price on its page. Viking’s Tromsø extension includes transfers, with a representative meeting you on arrival. We found no other line’s transfer prices for Tromsø, so plan your own ride.

What the ride to the centre costs
The taxi row is per car, an approximate weekday daytime fare; the bus rows are per adult.
| Taxi to the centre, weekday daytime, approximate (University of Tromsø, April 2025) | — |
| Airport express, one way, per adult (Best Arctic) | — |
| City bus, adult single at peak (2025 fare) | — |
One way, in kroner. The airport express fare is from the timetable that ran to 31 March 2026, and the taxi and city-bus fares are from 2025 sources; we couldn’t find newer ones, so check when you travel. Children 4 to 15 rode the airport express for NOK 80.
The rental desks are at the airport. A car makes little sense for a Tromsø cruise unless you’re touring first, because Fjellet is NOK 420 to 450 a day; Avinor’s P7 and P11 cap a week at NOK 949.
Landing on sail day? Check your timing
Hurtigruten asks North Cape Line guests to be aboard by 17:00 for the 18:00 departure; that’s the first row. The second is our own margin, not a rule. For any other line, use the cut-off in your documents.
- Hurtigruten's latest boardingHurtigruten North Cape Line: be aboard by 17:00 for the 18:00 departure from Prostneset Kai 8.—
- A ride in with time to spareOur rule of thumb, not a line's: land at least 4 hours before the ship leaves.—
Your boarding documents set your check-in time. We’d land the day before; a morning landing leaves nothing for a delayed flight, and most routes connect through Oslo.
Fly in a day early. Walk to Prostneset in the morning.
We ranked thirteen hotels for a Tromsø cruise, twelve of them within about 500 m of the quay. Tell us the flight and the ship, and we’ll pick the night that fits.
The morning you’re back
Hurtigruten’s North Cape Line voyages arrive back in Tromsø at 10:00; the other lines we read don’t publish a disembarkation time. The airport express and taxis both run back to the airport, about 10 minutes by car, per Visit Tromsø. Enter your flight and when you expect to be ashore; the planner sets out the ride and the wait.
Partner links (rental cars) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.
City buses, the bridge and your suitcase
There’s no train to Tromsø, so you’ll fly in, or arrive by sea. Visit Tromsø lists several flights a day from Oslo, about 1 hour 50 minutes, on SAS, Widerøe and Norwegian.
City buses take the Svipper app, the ticket machines or a Visa or Mastercard on board; no cash. Bus 42 is the one that links the airport, the centre and Breivika. Until November 1, 2026 the Tromsø Bridge is closed to cars; buses still cross between 07:00 and 17:00 and go through the Tromsøysund Tunnel overnight, and you can walk or cycle over at any time.
We found no luggage storage at the airport. In town, the Prostneset port terminal keeps bags on its first floor, 06:30 to 01:30; Tromsø Luggage Storage on Strandskillet has 24-hour card-only lockers; and Jekta shopping centre has lockers on level 1, per Visit Tromsø, which lists no prices. For the quays and the lines, see our Tromsø cruise guide.
Flying in the day before
One night in Tromsø takes the clock off sail day, and in winter it’s a night to look for the northern lights. Twelve of our thirteen are within about 500 m of Prostneset.
None runs a shuttle to the ship. Quality Grand, the Radisson and Scandic Ishavshotel have the airport bus at the door, and Moxy, by the airport, is on its route.
Six for the night before
Our top six, with the straight-line distance from Tromsø Airport to each. All thirteen are on the hotels page.
Airport to hotel
What each of our thirteen says about getting from Tromsø Airport to its door. None is a walk from the terminal; the centre hotels lean on the airport express.
Hotels with a ride or a walk from here
- None of the thirteen lists a ride from here.
