Getting There · Longyearbyen

Nearest Airport to the Longyearbyen Cruise Port

There’s one airport, and most guests never touch a taxi. Svalbard Airport is 4 km from the port, per Visit Svalbard, and expedition lines usually fly you in and move you to the ship themselves.

The short answer

Fly into Svalbard Airport, Longyear (LYR). It’s the only way in for almost everyone: Norwegian and SAS fly direct from Oslo in about three hours, SAS also via Tromsø, and expedition lines run their own flights.

If your line sells a transfer, that’s your ride. Otherwise the Flybuss meets every scheduled flight and stops at the hotels: NOK 125 for adults from 1 August 2026, per Svalbard Buss og Taxi. Avinor still prints NOK 110; that fare is out of date.

Two things catch people out. Svalbard is outside Schengen, so you need valid Schengen entry clearance to fly out, and charters can carry strict bag limits.

Take the Flybuss if

  • You’re going to a hotel the night before
  • Your line’s transfer isn’t in your package
  • You have card or kroner for the fare

Use the line’s transfer if

  • You’re on its flight; Oceanwide includes transfers only for group-flight passengers
  • You’re flying in on sail day
  • Your package includes it, as Quark’s charter package does

Hurtigruten’s transfer vouchers have to be printed, because the local supplier can’t take digital ones. We couldn’t verify Ponant, Poseidon, Albatros, Silversea or Aurora logistics this round.

The Ride

What the ride to town costs

The Flybuss is per adult, as Svalbard Buss og Taxi prints it. Neither taxi company publishes a fare, so there’s no taxi row.

Travelers
Flybuss, per adult, from 1 August 2026 (Svalbard Buss og Taxi)—

One way, in kroner, as published on October 12, 2026. Students pay NOK 80 and children up to 14 NOK 55, and two children ride free with a parent. Avinor’s NOK 110 is the old fare. Pay on board, by card or in kroner.

Taxis come from Svalbard Buss og Taxi and Longyearbyen Taxi, which you can pre-book or take from the airport queue. Hurtigruten warns of waits because there aren’t many cars.

Sail-Day Landing

Landing on sail day? Check your timing

No line we read publishes a latest boarding time for Longyearbyen. Hurtigruten’s Svalbard Line boards from 14:00 for a 19:00 departure. Both rows below are our own margins, not a line’s rules.

  • A ride in with time to spareOur rule of thumb, not a line's: land at least 4 hours before the ship leaves.—
  • The day beforeOur advice for Svalbard, not a line's rule: fly in the day before, as HX and Hurtigruten build into their own packages.—

Your boarding documents set your check-in time. If you’re on the line’s own flight, the line plans the timing; if you book your own, we’d land the day before. There’s no left-luggage at the airport.

Find my three picks
Coming Home

The morning you’re back

Hurtigruten’s Svalbard Line ends at 13:00 with a transfer to town or the airport; Lindblad flies its group straight back to Oslo. On your own, the Flybuss runs to the timetable printed at each stop. Enter your flight and when you expect to be ashore.

There are no partner links in this plan. It’s built only from what the bus company, the airport, the lines and each hotel publish.

Bags and Borders

Bags, borders and the charter

Svalbard sits outside Schengen. Avinor says you need valid Schengen entry clearance to fly out, and travellers without it are denied boarding. On arrival there may be a police identity check before baggage claim; it isn’t on every flight. Visit Svalbard says identity control applies to everyone, Norwegians included. If you need a Schengen visa, the Governor of Svalbard says you need double- or multiple-entry permission to get back through the mainland.

Charter bags are the other trap. Quark’s Helsinki charter has a strict weight limit for checked and cabin bags, and there’s no option to pay for more. Avinor wants lithium batteries and power banks in your carry-on.

There’s no left-luggage at the airport or the port. The Radisson Blu Polar, Funken Lodge, Basecamp and the Svalbard Hotell properties list baggage storage. For the quays and the lines, see our Longyearbyen cruise guide.

Fly In Early

Flying in the day before

One night in Longyearbyen takes the flight risk off sail day, and several lines build that night in for you. Most of our ten are in the centre.

None runs its own shuttle to the ship. The Flybuss stops at or near most of them, and the Radisson is where Hurtigruten’s Svalbard Line guests leave their bags.
