Night-Before Score
The verdict

Funken is the splurge, and it scores level with the Radisson. Breakfast comes with every stay, and there’s a restaurant, a sauna and a cellar with more than 70 champagnes, per Hurtigruten Svalbard.

The building has a story. It went up in 1947 to house Store Norske’s managers, the cellar was Svalbard’s first alcohol store, and you swap your shoes for slippers at the door, the old mining custom.

It loses first place only on distance. Bykaia is about 2.1 km in a straight line, so plan on the line’s transfer or a taxi.

Book it if

  • You want the last night ashore to feel like part of the trip
  • A champagne tasting appeals
  • You want breakfast and dinner in the building

Look elsewhere if

  • You’re sailing Hurtigruten and want its bag drop; that’s at the Radisson
  • You want the nearest bed to Bykaia

Which quay

Bykaia

Measured to Bykaia, Port Longyear’s main quay, Funken Lodge is about 2.1 km in a straight line, and about 750 m from the town centre. No turnaround quay is published: smaller ships use other piers or anchor and tender, and Quark warns you may board by Zodiac. Your line’s documents name the place; the Longyearbyen cruise guide has the rest.
