Longyearbyen is where Svalbard expeditions start and end. Port Longyear runs the quays; ships either berth or anchor in Adventfjorden and tender in. Most guests arrive by air from Oslo, Tromsø or, on one 2026 charter, Helsinki, and their line moves them to the ship.
This page is for starting or ending a voyage here. If your ship is only calling for the day, our Longyearbyen port-day guide covers the walk into town and the polar-bear safe zone, and our shore excursion picks cover the guided trips.
A few fees ride on your ticket. The Svalbard environmental fee, NOK 150 per passenger, is charged to the operator and built into the fare, per the Governor of Svalbard. Port Longyear’s 2026 tariff adds NOK 45 per passenger on embarking and again on disembarking, billed to the ship. A NOK 180 visitor contribution per cruise passenger is proposed, not adopted: the government’s consultation closed on 3 June 2026, the proposal is still under consideration, and the draft would take effect on 1 January 2027.
Cruise lines sailing from here
Deployments change every season, so this roster is dated and sourced, and it lives only here.
Checked against each line’s own pages and brochures on October 12, 2026. Hurtigruten’s Svalbard Line (MS Trollfjord and MS Midnatsol) boards at Bykaia from 14:00 and sails at 19:00, with the night before at the Radisson Blu Polar; its Spitsbergen Adventurer, MS Nordstjernen, sails from the private Gammelkaia. HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions) starts its Circumnavigating Svalbard voyage in Oslo, with flights to Longyearbyen and one hotel night before boarding in the afternoon; the page we read is the 2024 edition. Quark’s 2026 Three Arctic Islands flies a private charter from Helsinki, not Oslo, with a strict bag weight limit. Lindblad, on National Geographic Endurance, sells a group flight from Oslo after a hotel night there. Oceanwide runs Hondius, Ortelius, Plancius and Rembrandt van Rijn round trips from 24 April 2026 into September. We couldn’t verify Ponant, Poseidon, Albatros, Silversea or Aurora logistics this round.

Deployments change; confirm your own ship and date before you book around it.
Where you can go
Most voyages from Longyearbyen are round trips around Svalbard. Some are positioning voyages: Oceanwide’s 2026 brochure runs ships between Longyearbyen and Tromsø, Akureyri, Keflavik, Aberdeen, Vlissingen and Constable Pynt in East Greenland. The stops below are ones we cover; one voyage won’t call at all of them.

Around Svalbard
5The archipelago itself. Since 2025, landings in protected areas are limited to 43 sites, with a 200-passenger cap on ships there, per the Governor.
Ny-Ålesund
Svalbard
A research settlement; ships call briefly, and visitors keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off.
Barentsburg
Svalbard
A Russian mining settlement; confirm it’s still on the itinerary.
Pyramiden
Svalbard
The Soviet mining town abandoned in 1998.

4Where some ships start or finish instead of Longyearbyen, and the mainland ports for a trip north.
No destination matches that. Clear the filter to see all 9 again.
Before or after the ship: the town is free to walk inside its marked safe zone. Past it, the Governor of Svalbard’s rules on polar-bear protection apply and, in practice, you go with a licensed guide; our port-day page explains where the line runs. There are no ATMs in Svalbard, per Visit Svalbard, so bring a card.
Bykaia, the smaller piers and the anchorage
Port Longyear’s main terminal is Bykaia. It takes ships up to 350 m long and 9 m draft, and it’s a fenced ISPS terminal with cameras and a guard at the gate. Turistkaia, a floating pier, takes ships up to 60 m. When Bykaia is full, or a ship doesn’t fit, it anchors in Adventfjorden and sends tenders to Tenderkaia. Port Longyear says demand outstrips berths at times, so it may send ships to anchor or move them.
No one publishes which quay is the turnaround quay. Hurtigruten’s Svalbard Line uses Bykaia; its Nordstjernen uses the private Gammelkaia; and Quark warns that you may board by Zodiac rather than from the pier. Visit Svalbard puts the port about 2 km from the town centre and 4 km from the airport.
| Quay | Where | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Bykaia | The main terminal, about 2 km from the centre | Ships to 350 m and 9 m draft; fenced ISPS terminal; Hurtigruten’s Svalbard Line boards here |
| Turistkaia | Floating pier, 350 m long, berthable from both sides | Ships up to 60 m: small expedition ships, day boats; passengers pay a passenger tax to use it, per Port Longyear |
| Tenderkaia and Adventfjorden | Tender pier; ships anchor in 30–100 m of water | Used when Bykaia is full or a ship doesn’t fit |
| Kullkaia | The coal pier | Ships to 180 m, per Visit Svalbard; Port Longyear gives no specifications |
| Gammelkaia | Private pier | Ships to 100 m, per Visit Svalbard; Hurtigruten’s MS Nordstjernen sails from here |

Sources: portlongyear.no (piers and the 2026 tariff), Visit Svalbard’s Port Longyear page, hurtigruten.com and Quark’s 2026 brochure, read October 12, 2026. Visit Svalbard gives Bykaia 335 m; we use the port’s own 350 m. Confirm with your line — the quay can change with the ship.
Parking, in short
You won’t need it. Almost everyone sailing from Longyearbyen flies in, on a scheduled flight or the line’s own, and the line usually handles the ride to the ship. Port Longyear publishes no cruise parking, and none of our ten hotels mentions parking.
What you do need to plan is luggage. Avinor says bag transport between the harbour and the airport has to be arranged in advance, and there’s no left-luggage service at the airport.
Getting here
Svalbard Airport is about 5 km from town and, per Visit Svalbard, 4 km from the port. Norwegian and SAS fly direct from Oslo, about three hours; SAS also flies via Tromsø, about an hour and a half from there. The Flybuss meets every scheduled flight.
| From | Taxi | Public transport |
|---|---|---|
| LYR — airport to town | Svalbard Buss og Taxi or Longyearbyen Taxi; no fares published, and you may wait. | Flybuss, NOK 125 for adults from 1 August 2026, leaving 30 to 40 minutes after each scheduled landing and stopping at the hotels; about 15 minutes, per Avinor. |
| LYR — airport to the ship | Order ahead; Visit Svalbard says nothing waits at the port. | Your line’s transfer. Hurtigruten runs a direct airport-to-ship transfer after 13:00 for its Svalbard Line; Quark’s charter package includes the arrival transfer. |
| Town — to Bykaia | Order ahead. | On foot, about 1,900 m and 20 to 25 minutes between Bykaia and the Svalbard Museum, per the museum. Fine without bags. |

Svalbard is outside Schengen. You need valid Schengen entry clearance to fly out, and police may check ID on arrival before baggage claim, per Avinor; bring a passport or national ID card. Svalbard Airport to the ship has the rest.
The night before, ranked: we’ve scored ten places for the night before a Longyearbyen voyage, from the centre to the miners’ barracks in Nybyen, on what each one publishes. None runs its own ride to the ship. Five worth knowing:
| Hotel | Where | One thing to know |
|---|---|---|
| Radisson Blu Polar | The shore end of the centre | No. 1: breakfast in the rate, and Hurtigruten’s Svalbard Line guests leave bags here on sail day. |
| Funken Lodge | Vei 212, above the centre | The splurge: a 1947 lodge with breakfast in every stay and a champagne cellar. |
| Basecamp | The centre, by the main street | Sixteen trapper-style rooms in the centre, breakfast included. |
| Coal Miners' Cabins | Nybyen, up the valley | The budget pick in Nybyen: breakfast included, bathrooms shared except in Family Rooms. |
| Svalbard Lodge | The centre | Apartments for four or six, with kitchens and washing machines. |

Longyearbyen FAQ
Where do expedition ships dock in Longyearbyen?
Port Longyear’s main quay is Bykaia, for ships up to 350 m. Smaller ships use the floating Turistkaia or the private Gammelkaia, and ships without a berth anchor in Adventfjorden and tender to Tenderkaia. No turnaround quay is published, and Quark warns you may board by Zodiac.
How do I get from Svalbard Airport to my ship?
Usually your line does it. Hurtigruten runs a direct airport-to-ship transfer after 13:00 for its Svalbard Line, and Quark’s charter package includes the arrival transfer. Otherwise the Flybuss runs to the hotels for NOK 125, and taxis must be ordered.
Do I need a passport for Svalbard?
Bring one, or a national ID card. Svalbard is outside Schengen: Avinor says you need valid Schengen entry clearance to fly out, and police may check ID on arrival. Visit Svalbard says identity control applies to everyone.
Is there a cruise passenger tax in Longyearbyen?
The NOK 150 Svalbard environmental fee is built into your ticket, and Port Longyear charges the ship NOK 45 per passenger on embarking and again on disembarking. A NOK 180 visitor contribution is proposed, not adopted; the draft would take effect on 1 January 2027.
When is the Svalbard cruise season?
Port Longyear doesn’t publish one. Oceanwide’s 2026 Longyearbyen departures run from 24 April into September, though most of its ships start in late May or June. The midnight sun lasts from 17 May to 30 September.
Are the expedition flights to Longyearbyen always from Oslo?
No. HX and Lindblad fly guests from Oslo, but Quark’s 2026 Three Arctic Islands charter leaves from Helsinki, with a strict bag weight limit and no option to pay for extra.
