Radisson Blu Polar Hotel, Spitsbergen
The hotel Hurtigruten uses for its Svalbard voyages, with breakfast in the rate, a sauna and two places to eat, about 1.3 km from Bykaia.
Pre-Cruise Hotels · Longyearbyen
Ten places to sleep before a Svalbard voyage, scored on what they publish, not on reviews. Most lines move you to the ship, so the walk matters less here than breakfast and the evening; five of the ten put breakfast in the rate.
Three taps and we’ll show your three picks.
Change any answer and the picks change with it. They’re built from the same published facts as the ranking below. No hotel pays for a place here. Booking.com links earn us a commission, and they don’t change the order.
Matching weighs your answers against each hotel’s published shuttle, parking, breakfast, pool, kitchen and pet policies.
Five answers, and the page builds the whole thing: the hotel, the ride in, the ride to the ship, what happens to the car, what time to leave, and how you get home. Every figure is one the hotel, the port or the company publishes. Where nobody publishes a number, you’ll see that instead of a guess.
There’s no cruise parking to price here, so the plan assumes you fly in.
Who’s coming and the mood come from Your Match; the plan uses the same answers.
There are no partner links in this plan. It’s built only from what the bus company, the airport, the lines and each hotel publish.
The Radisson Blu Polar wins: breakfast in the rate, a restaurant, a gastropub and a sauna, and it’s where Hurtigruten’s Svalbard Line guests leave their bags. Funken Lodge ties it on 46 and loses only on distance. Basecamp is third, with breakfast and sixteen trapper-style rooms.
Narrow the ten by what your night needs. Save the ones you like. Tick up to three to compare side by side — the order is ours, the shortlist is yours.
Why ten? We checked thirteen on Visit Svalbard’s list and beyond, and left out three; they’re at the bottom of the page.
Add your sail date and the links open on the night before.

Pick how you’re arriving. The board counts what each hotel publishes, the table lights up that column, and the cards below are the rides from the airport.
None of the ten runs its own airport shuttle. The public Flybuss meets every scheduled flight and stops at or near most of them; two stops are closed until 31 October 2026.
Svalbard Airport · 4 km from the port, per Visit Svalbard; Flybuss NOK 125, adult
Leaves 30 to 40 minutes after each scheduled landing and stops at the hotels; to the airport it runs to the timetable at each stop. The Basecamp and Lodge stop is closed 9 August to 31 October 2026; use Polfareren. Pay on board, card or kroner.
Svalbard Buss og Taxi and Longyearbyen Taxi, pre-booked or from the airport queue. Hurtigruten warns of waits.
Hurtigruten runs a direct airport-to-ship transfer after 13:00 for its Svalbard Line; Quark and Oceanwide include transfers for guests on their flights.
Driving? It barely applies here. None of the ten mentions parking; see the parking note below.

Svalbard Airport, Longyear (LYR)No hotel shuttle, but Radisson says the airport bus is timed to flights and you pay on board, in kroner or by card. To the shipThe hotel lists no ride of its own, but Hurtigruten’s Svalbard Line works out of it: guests can leave bags at reception on embarkation day, and there’s a direct airport-to-ship transfer after 13:00. Bykaia is about 1.3 km in a straight line. | |||

Every distance ends at Bykaia, Port Longyear’s main quay, and every one is a straight line between our own map pins, not a route. Your ship may use another pier or anchor offshore, and most lines run the transfer, so treat these as a rough guide.
Walking times assume an easy pace on streets about a third longer than the straight line. With expedition bags, nobody walks to Bykaia; Visit Svalbard says taxis and buses to the port must be ordered ahead.
Five things make a night before easy or hard. In Longyearbyen, breakfast and the evening do most of the work, because the line usually handles the ride. Points come from the hotel, its owner or, where the hotel’s own site wouldn’t load, Visit Svalbard’s listing.
Silence scores zero, not a guess. Booking sites don’t count, and a walking time to “the harbour” isn’t a walking time to a cruise quay.
By band, from Bykaia: in town, to about 2.3 km in a straight line, 30; Nybyen, up the valley, 25. Nothing here is a short walk with bags, so the bands are wide.
A transfer the hotel runs or arranges, with a published price, 25. A ride only inside a package 20. The hotel’s own ride with no published fare 15. A walk the hotel itself prints at half a mile or less 15. Nobody in Longyearbyen scores here; no hotel publishes its own ride to the ship. Hurtigruten’s bag drop at the Radisson is the line’s arrangement, not the hotel’s, so it doesn’t score either.
A published rate to leave the car at the hotel while you cruise 20; offered, but unpriced or not guaranteed, 14. Day rates in a public garage don’t count. Nobody scores here either.
A breakfast the hotel says is included scores 10. The Radisson, Funken Lodge, Basecamp, Coal Miners’ Cabins and Gjestehuset 102 say so. The Radisson and Basecamp are scored from Visit Svalbard’s listings.
Pool 3, food or a bar on site 3, a kitchen in the room 3, a sauna or spa 3, a gym 3. Nobody here has a pool. Shared kitchens don’t count; the Lodge’s apartments have their own. A restaurant known only from Booking.com doesn’t count.
Ties are broken in order: any published parking for your cruise, any stated ride to the ship, free breakfast, then the shorter straight-line distance to Bykaia. The Radisson takes first from Funken Lodge, both on 46, because it’s nearer Bykaia, about 1.3 km against 2.1 km. Three tie on 30: The Vault, Polfareren and Haugen Pensjonat, in that order of distance.
What’s left out is deliberate. Room rates move by the day, so they aren’t scored, and review scores neither. Distances are straight lines between our own map pins, not routed walks or drives, and we say so wherever they appear.
No hotel in our ten mentions parking, and that’s fine. A Longyearbyen voyage starts with a flight, not a drive.
Why there’s no calculator. Almost everyone sailing from here arrives by air, on a scheduled flight from Oslo or Tromsø or on the line’s own flight. Port Longyear publishes no cruise parking, and none of the ten hotels prints a parking rate, so there’s nothing to add up.
What to plan instead. Bags. Avinor says luggage transport between the harbour and the airport has to be arranged in advance, and there’s no left-luggage at the airport. The Radisson, Funken Lodge, Basecamp and the Svalbard Hotell properties list baggage storage.
We checked thirteen and ranked ten. The three we left out:
| Hotel | Why it isn’t ranked |
|---|---|
| Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel | Visit Svalbard lists it, but it’s a remote station far outside Longyearbyen, so it doesn’t work for the night before a voyage. |
| Haudegen | Not on Visit Svalbard’s accommodation list, and we couldn’t confirm it’s open. |
| Longyearbyen Camping | Visit Svalbard lists it. It’s a campsite, and we ranked rooms. |
Svalbard Airport is 4 km from the port, per Visit Svalbard, and about 5 km from town. The Flybuss meets every scheduled flight and stops at the hotels for NOK 125 per adult.
Coming in on your line’s flight? Check whether the hotel night and the transfer are already in the package; HX and Hurtigruten build them in. The Getting There table shows what each hotel publishes, and the airport page has the fares and the landing check.
Tours, tickets and things to do are on Booking.com. Book the day before, not sail day.

On our scoring, the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel: breakfast in the rate per Visit Svalbard, a restaurant, a gastropub and a sauna, and Hurtigruten’s Svalbard Line uses it as its bag drop. Funken Lodge ties it on points.
From Port Longyear. Bykaia is the main quay; smaller ships use other piers, and ships without a berth anchor in Adventfjorden. Quark warns you may board by Zodiac. Your documents name the place.
Not sensibly with bags. The nearest of our ten, Mary-Ann’s Polarrigg, is about 1.1 km from Bykaia in a straight line, and Visit Svalbard says the port is about 2 km from the centre. Use your line’s transfer or a taxi ordered ahead.
At five of our ten: the Radisson Blu Polar, Funken Lodge, Basecamp, Coal Miners’ Cabins and Gjestehuset 102. Elsewhere it isn’t stated.
Coal Miners’ Cabins (except the Family Rooms) and Gjestehuset 102, both in Nybyen, and some rooms at Mary-Ann’s Polarrigg.
A visitor contribution of NOK 60 per hotel night, or 3%, is proposed alongside the NOK 180 cruise-passenger charge. Neither is adopted; the draft would take effect on 1 January 2027.
