In short

Where can I cruise in April?

Five ocean regions are at peak in April: the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera, the Panama Canal, Asia and transatlantic crossings. The other ten — the Mediterranean, Bermuda, Alaska, Northern Europe, Canada & New England, Hawaii & South Pacific, Australia & New Zealand, South America & Antarctica, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos — are open.

Two of those ten are new this month. Alaska and Canada & New England open with a handful of late-April departures, and the Eastern Mediterranean, Adriatic and Greek Isles come onto the atlas for the first time since autumn.

No ocean region is closed. The Seine and Rhône are the rivers at peak. Six more rivers are open, and the Mississippi has no verified season.

How to choose

April's trade-off: winter's last peak or Europe's early start

The first-cruise pick in April is still the Caribbean — last peak month, driest stretch, 13 departure ports. After April the region steps down to open, so if peak conditions are the point, April is the deadline.

Crowd-avoiders have ten open regions to choose from, the most of any month so far. The Eastern Mediterranean is the one we'd watch: Greek-island, Adriatic and Turkish routes have just started and the May–October busy months haven't.

Alaska is the scenery call. Handle it with care. A late-April departure exists on a handful of ships, and the line's own caveat is blunt: a shoulder departure does not promise every port or glacier. Weigh it against a May start before you book on price alone.

River cruising

Rivers in April

Two of April's eight rivers are at their best — the Seine, because Giverny reopens, and the Rhône, because Tauck's season starts. The Columbia & Snake has its last spring departures before a September return.

Looking ahead

May hands the peak to Europe

May moves the peak across the Atlantic. The Mediterranean, Bermuda and Northern Europe all start their best months, the Rhine joins the Seine and Rhône at peak, and the Baltic opens.

Four winter peaks end at once — the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal and Asia all step down to open. South America & Antarctica and the Columbia & Snake close outright, so April is the last month for either until autumn.

Quick answers

Cruising in April: questions

Where can I cruise in April?

Anywhere on our ocean atlas: all fifteen regions sail in April, with the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, Asia and transatlantic crossings at peak. The other ten — the Mediterranean, Bermuda, Alaska, Northern Europe, Canada & New England, Hawaii & South Pacific, Australia & New Zealand, South America & Antarctica, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos — are open, and on the rivers the Seine and Rhône are at peak with six more sailing.

Can I still get to Antarctica in April?

Not by expedition ship on our atlas — departures run late October to March. The South America coast is open through April, so Rio, Buenos Aires and Montevideo are still possible; Cape Horn and the peninsula are not.

Which river is best in April?

The Seine or the Rhône. Giverny is offered on April–October Seine departures and was closed in March, and Tauck's Rhône season opens this month. The Danube, Rhine, Douro, Nile, Mekong and Columbia & Snake are sailing but not at peak.

Is April a good month for a first cruise?

Yes. It's the last peak month in the Caribbean, which has the most departure ports and ports of call on our map. If you can't sail until May, the region is still open; you'd be giving up the driest, busiest stretch, not the cruise.

Which regions are quieter in April?

Ten of them: the Mediterranean, Bermuda, Alaska, Northern Europe, Canada & New England, Hawaii & South Pacific, Australia & New Zealand, South America & Antarctica, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos. The Eastern Med and the Galápagos are the two we'd shortlist.

Does the Kimberley season start in April?

Yes. Kimberley expedition cruising runs April to September, in the region's dry season — the opposite of the Australian summer that has just ended for New Zealand itineraries. June to August is its peak.
