In short

Where can I cruise in November?

Cruise at peak in November in the Mexican Riviera, Asia, Australia & New Zealand or on a transatlantic crossing. Ten regions are open: the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Bermuda, Panama Canal, Northern Europe, Canada & New England, Hawaii & South Pacific, South America & Antarctica, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos.

Asia's three sub-areas are all at peak at once — Singapore & Southeast Asia as its dry season starts, Japan and the Hong Kong–China–Korea–Taiwan circuit in the second month of their typical autumn window. March and April are the only other months that happens.

Alaska is closed; everything else sails, including Canada & New England's first days of November and the Eastern Mediterranean's last open month. The Mekong is the one river at peak, five European rivers and the Nile are open, and the Douro closes after November.

How to choose

West Coast week, long-haul Pacific or one more crossing

Pick the Mexican Riviera for a first cruise at peak — the Cabo, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta week from Los Angeles, with the most ships and driest weather of the year starting now. The Caribbean has more ports, 41 to 8, but is open rather than peak until December and still in hurricane season's last month.

Quieter sailing is wherever Europe's summer just ended: the Mediterranean's eastern half in its final open month, Bermuda's last weekly round trips, Canada & New England's handful of early-November departures. The Galápagos is quiet too, a month before its mid-December rush.

For expedition, November is the opening act in the south: Antarctic ships are departing from Ushuaia and Punta Arenas, the peak is a month away, and landings depend on weather, ice and permits whichever month you pick. The Norwegian coast is the northern alternative, inside its October–March northern-lights window.

December brings the southern peaks

December adds five peaks: the Caribbean, Panama Canal, South America & Antarctica, the Galápagos and the Nile. Seven ocean regions will be at their best at once, tied with January for the most in any month.

Transatlantic crossings leave their peak, and Canada & New England and the Douro close. The Danube, Rhine, Seine and Rhône stay open for their Christmas-market and holiday sailings, then all four leave the atlas in January.

Quick answers

Cruising in November: questions

Where can I cruise in November?

November's peak regions are the Mexican Riviera, Asia, Australia & New Zealand and transatlantic crossings. Ten regions are open — the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Bermuda, Panama Canal, Northern Europe, Canada & New England, Hawaii & South Pacific, South America & Antarctica, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos — and the Mekong is the river at peak.

Can I see the Norwegian fjords in November?

Not on a fjord cruise — big-ship fjord cruising is a summer product, May to September on our atlas. Coastal voyages sail every day of the year and reach some fjords in other months, and November is inside the October–March northern-lights cruise window.

Which rivers are sailing in November?

Seven. The Mekong is at peak as its November–March window opens, and the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Rhône, Douro and Nile are open — the Douro for its last month, the Seine with Giverny closed, the Nile workable but hot at midday.

Is November a good month for a first cruise?

Yes, with the Mexican Riviera the peak region to do it in: three West Coast departure ports, eight ports of call, and the start of the months with the most ships and driest weather. The Caribbean has far more ports but doesn't reach peak until December.

Which regions are quieter in November?

Ten regions sit below peak in November. The Mediterranean and Bermuda, both just out of their summer peak, and the Galápagos before its mid-December rush are the three we'd look at first; the Caribbean is quieter too, in the last month of hurricane season.

Do Christmas-market river cruises start in November?

From late November, yes. The Danube and Rhine season labels both carry Christmas-market sailings from late November into December, and Viking and Riverside run them on the Rhine and Moselle; most of November is the regular season's tail rather than the markets.
