In short

Where can I cruise in May?

May's peak regions are the Mediterranean, Bermuda, Northern Europe and transatlantic crossings. Ten are open — the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, Alaska, Canada & New England, Hawaii & South Pacific, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos.

The sub-areas tell the real story, and five of them move at once. The Baltic opens, Norway's fjords and Svalbard open, French Polynesia enters its drier months, and New Zealand closes until October. Alaska is open with most ships now sailing, a month before its peak.

One ocean region is closed: South America & Antarctica. The Rhine, Seine and Rhône are at peak on the rivers; the Columbia & Snake is off the atlas until September.

How to choose

Choosing a May cruise between two seasons

The Mediterranean is the first-cruise answer in May. Both halves are at peak for the first time this year, nine departure ports run from Barcelona to Piraeus, and the May–October busy season is just underway.

If you'd rather avoid crowds, Alaska in May is the quiet version of a peak trip — most ships are sailing, the June–August peak hasn't started, and unlike a late-April departure this isn't the shoulder. The Caribbean is the other quiet pick: past peak, and still a month clear of hurricane season.

For scenery, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords opens its fjord and Svalbard seasons in May, with Bergen, Kirkenes and Longyearbyen the departure points we map. Ice and weather decide Svalbard landings; book June to August if you want the same trip at peak.

June: Alaska and the Arctic reach peak

June brings four new peaks — Alaska, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords, the Galápagos and the Danube — and the Baltic joins British Isles & Western Europe at peak inside Northern Europe.

Transatlantic crossings and the Rhône step down from peak, the Panama Canal closes until September, and nothing opens. If a transit is on your list, May is the last month to take it before autumn.

Quick answers

Cruising in May: questions

Where can I cruise in May?

Four ocean regions are at peak in May — the Mediterranean, Bermuda, Northern Europe and transatlantic crossings — and ten more are open: the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, Alaska, Canada & New England, Hawaii & South Pacific, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos. On the rivers the Rhine, Seine and Rhône are at peak, with the Danube, Douro, Nile and Mekong sailing.

Can I cruise to Antarctica in May?

No. Expedition ships depart late October to March, and the South America coastal season ends in April, so the whole region is closed on our atlas until October. The Kimberley coast and Svalbard are the expedition seasons that are open.

Which European rivers are at peak in May?

Four of them: the Rhine and Moselle, the Seine and the Rhône. The Danube is sailing a month before its June–September busy stretch, and the Douro is in season with Emerald, though AmaWaterways' listed departures skip May.

Is May a good month for a first cruise?

It is. The Mediterranean is the region to do it in: both sub-areas at peak, nine departure ports and 18 ports of call on our map. Nothing else at peak this month offers that much choice.

Which regions are quieter in May?

Ten are open without peak. Two stand out. Alaska and the Caribbean — Alaska because most ships are sailing but the June–August peak hasn't begun, the Caribbean because it's past peak and still ahead of hurricane season.

When does New Zealand stop sailing?

May. New Zealand itineraries cluster in the southern summer, roughly October to April, and we found no dated winter sailings. Australia keeps sailing year-round from Sydney and Brisbane, and the Kimberley coast is in season from April to September.
