In short

Where can I cruise in August?

Peak conditions hold in six ocean regions in August: Alaska, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Bermuda and the Galápagos. Open rather than peak are the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Canada & New England, Hawaii & South Pacific, Asia, Australia & New Zealand and transatlantic crossings.

What separates August from July is what follows it. Alaska's June–August peak ends here, the Baltic's too, and Svalbard, the fjords, the Kimberley coast and the Galápagos busy stretch all run out within weeks of each other.

Still closed: the Panama Canal and South America & Antarctica, with the canal's first repositioning transits a September thing. Four rivers are at peak — the Danube, Rhine, Seine and Rhône — for the second month running.

How to choose

August is the month to stop waiting

A first cruise in August has two peak answers: the Mediterranean for choice, with nine departure ports and both halves at peak, or Alaska for the last peak month before the September shoulder. If Alaska is the one, August is the booking.

Quieter options sit on the open list. Canada & New England has a month before its foliage peak, Hawaii sails weekly with nothing to time, and the transatlantic lane is between its two rushes — skip the Caribbean and Mexican Riviera unless hurricane-season itinerary changes don't bother you.

Expedition travellers should read August as last call three times over: the Kimberley coast's June–August peak, Svalbard's midnight-sun months and the Galápagos's mid-June-to-early-September stretch all close out. Sixteen Antarctic expedition stops sit on our map, and none is reachable until late October.

River cruising

Rivers in August

Same four rivers at peak as July — the Danube, Rhine, Seine and Rhône — and August is the second-last month all four hold. The Columbia & Snake returns next month; the Mekong's late-summer departures start now.

Looking ahead

September takes three peaks away

September ends the peak in Alaska, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos, and starts it in Canada & New England as the foliage window opens. The Baltic and the Kimberley coast drop to open at sub-area level.

Two things come back: the Panama Canal, with its odd September repositioning transit, and the Columbia & Snake, with Lindblad's autumn departures. The Danube, Rhine, Seine and Rhône stay at peak for one more month.

Quick answers

Cruising in August: questions

Where can I cruise in August?

Alaska, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Bermuda and the Galápagos are at peak in August. The Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Canada & New England, Hawaii & South Pacific, Asia, Australia & New Zealand and transatlantic crossings are open, and the Danube, Rhine, Seine and Rhône are the rivers at peak.

Can I cruise Hong Kong, China or Korea in August?

Our atlas shows the Hong Kong–China–Korea–Taiwan circuit closed through the summer because of typhoon risk, with typical peaks in spring and autumn — October and November are the next ones. East Asia calendars vary by line and change year to year, so confirm dated sailings before planning around any month.

What river cruises sail in August?

Seven rivers. The Danube, Rhine, Seine and Rhône are at peak, and the Douro, Nile and Mekong are open — the Mekong with AmaWaterways' first late-summer departures, the Nile in summer heat. The Columbia & Snake returns in September, and the Mississippi has no verified season on our atlas.

Is August a good month for a first cruise?

It is, with a deadline attached. The Mediterranean is at peak with the most departure ports and ports of call of any region this month, and Alaska is in its final peak month — book Alaska for August if you want peak rather than shoulder.

Which regions are quieter in August?

Seven regions are open without peak: the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Canada & New England, Hawaii & South Pacific, Asia, Australia & New Zealand and transatlantic crossings. Canada & New England a month before foliage is the pick; the two hurricane-season regions come with itinerary caveats.

Is August too late for Alaska?

No — it's the last peak month, which is the opposite problem. The June–August peak ends in August, most ships sail through September, and a handful finish in early October; the warning about not every port or glacier being promised is for shoulder departures, and August isn't one.
