In short

Where can I cruise in September?

Four regions peak in September: the Mediterranean, Bermuda, Northern Europe and Canada & New England. Ten are open — the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, Alaska, Hawaii & South Pacific, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords, transatlantic crossings and the Galápagos.

Inside Northern Europe the two halves have split: British Isles & Western Europe is in its last peak month, while the Baltic has dropped to open with Copenhagen and Kiel handling shoulder-season turnarounds. Alaska, the fjords, Svalbard and the Kimberley coast are in the same position — sailing, past peak.

South America & Antarctica is the one closed ocean region, and it opens next month. The Danube, Rhine, Seine and Rhône hold their river peak for a final month together, and the Columbia & Snake is back with Lindblad's September departures.

How to choose

Picking a September cruise: foliage, shoulder or last call

For sheer choice at peak, a first cruise still belongs in the Mediterranean — nine departure ports, 18 ports of call, month five of six. Canada & New England is the new peak and the closer option from the Northeast, with seven turnarounds from Boston and New York up to Quebec City and Montréal.

Crowd-avoiders get the best September deal on the atlas: Alaska, the Norwegian fjords, Svalbard and the Baltic are all open a month after peak. Read the Alaska note first — most ships still sail in September, so this is the main season's last month, not the early-October shoulder.

Scenery is the September argument. Canada & New England's foliage window opens late in the month and no line can guarantee the timing; the Columbia Gorge is back with Lindblad's autumn block, and the Galápagos is past its busy stretch once early September is over.

River cruising

Rivers in September

Eight rivers sail in September, and four are at peak for the last month together: the Danube, Rhine, Seine and Rhône. The Columbia & Snake is back, and the Douro and Mekong both start their autumn departure blocks.

Looking ahead

October: every ocean region sails

October puts all 15 ocean regions on the atlas at once, as South America & Antarctica opens with late-October expedition departures. Transatlantic crossings start their autumn peak and the Columbia & Snake has its one peak month.

Northern Europe steps down from peak, the Baltic closes outright, and the Danube and Rhine leave their peak on the rivers. Alaska gets its final handful of early-October sailings and then goes dark until late April.

Quick answers

Cruising in September: questions

Where can I cruise in September?

The Mediterranean, Bermuda, Northern Europe and Canada & New England are at peak in September. Ten more regions are open — the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, Alaska, Hawaii & South Pacific, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords, transatlantic crossings and the Galápagos — and the Danube, Rhine, Seine and Rhône lead the rivers.

When does Japan's autumn cruise season start?

October, on our atlas, with September still showing closed. Japan's itineraries cluster in spring and autumn, per our Asia guide, and we haven't verified dated sailings month by month, so treat October and November as guidance and confirm the departure.

Which rivers hold their peak into September?

Four, for the last month together: the Danube, Rhine, Seine and Rhône. The Danube's busy June–September season ends here and the Rhine's warm months with it, while the Columbia & Snake returns with Lindblad's September departures and the Douro's autumn block begins.

Is September a good month for a first cruise?

Easily. The Mediterranean is still at peak with nine departure ports and 18 ports of call, more choice than any other peak region in September, and Canada & New England is the shorter trip from the Northeast in its first peak month.

Which regions are quieter in September?

Ten regions are open but not at peak. The ones worth a look are the four that peaked in August — Alaska, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords with fjords and Svalbard included, the Galápagos past its busy stretch, and the Baltic half of Northern Europe; the Caribbean and Mexican Riviera remain in hurricane season.

Is September early enough for foliage on a Canada & New England cruise?

The season profile puts the foliage window at late September to October, so a late-September departure is inside it and an early one isn't. No cruise line guarantees the timing — book on the itinerary and treat the colour as a bonus.
